Description

The 2020 Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon is a distinguished offering from the acclaimed Leeu Passant winery, a collaboration between Chris and Andrea Mullineux and Analjit Singh.

Inspired by the classic Cape wines of the 1960s through the 1980s, this Cabernet Sauvignon captures the essence of Stellenbosch’s renowned terroir, sourced from the cool slopes of Helderberg Mountain and Polkadraai Hills.

Crafted with meticulous care, the grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and naturally fermented without inoculation. Following a gentle maceration process, the wine matures for 20 months in 500L French oak barrels, with 30% being new oak, allowing the wine to develop its complex character and depth.

On the nose, this Cabernet exudes aromatic notes of cassis, tarragon, graphite, and cedar. These aromas carry through to the palate, which reveals a silky texture and finely structured tannins. It's rich and powerful but still retains balance and harmony, as well as an impressively long and dry finish.

An ode to Stellenbosch’s great Clarets, and another stunning offering from this formidable winemaking team.

95 points
"Firm, structured, taut and muscular on the palate, with uncommonly fresh acids, while tannins are chiseled, supported by those acids, leading through the long finish. A stellar wine to be revisited after 2025 at least, and I suspect this will age positively, and comfortably, into the late '30s. Terrific value on top of it all."
- John Szabo, MS (Wine Align)

95 points - "This cabernet is from the Helderberg, on the mid-slope facing, and about 4kms from the ocean, a cool, late site, often picked into April with an ideal microclimate and soil depth, planted in 1980. The wine is inspired by the more classic graphite-gravelly styles of cabernet, aged in 500l barrels for the 1st year, the 2nd year in large 5000l vats. The nose offers high intensity aromatics, combining both the fresh, black fruit and herbal components of the variety with the wild garrigue (fynbos) of the Cape in a highly attractive ensemble. Firm, structured, taut and muscular on the palate, with uncommonly fresh acids, while tannins are chiseled, supported by those acids, leading through the long finish. A stellar wine to be revisited after 2025 at least, and I suspect this will age positively, and comfortably, into the late '30s. Terrific value on top of it all." - John Szabo, MS (Wine Align)

93 points - "A complex nose of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, lead pencil and gravel. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Texturally driven with subtle concentration and intensity. Fresh and fruity with mineral undertones. Herbal complexity adds depth." - Jame Suckling

Vineyard Notes:

From a site in one of Stellenbosch’s coolest viticultural areas, planted on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain.

Production Notes:

Destemmed into tank, natural fermentation, pigeaged or pumped over twice a day. After fermentation, 3 weeks skin contact is given, and the wine is then drained and pressed to barrel. The wines are racked and blended in Spring and bottled after 20 months in barrel.

Maturation:

20 months in 500L French oak barrels; 30% new.

Tasting Notes:

This classically aromatic & supple Cabernet Sauvignon invites with notes of mulberry, dried orange rind, Kapokbos and pencil shavings on the nose. The palate opens to mouth-quenching cassis and fresh Sapphire plum, which are cupped by elegant, silky tannins. The richness and power of this wine are balanced by beautiful freshness and finesse.
