About

About The Wine

Steve Flamsteed goes south to uncover a different style of Pinot, a layered and powerful wine from southern Tasmania.

It's sourced from a single vineyard, and trucked and sailed from Coal River to the Yarra overnight. Some whole bunches were included in the ferment and the wine was matured in top end French oak for eight months. Unfined and unfiltered.

Lots of dark fruit flavours, firm tannin on the sides and a good kick of acidity - serious quality all around. Cellaring preferred...

About Giant Steps

Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton located in the in the township of Healesville. Since appointing Steve Flamsteed as his head winemaker and eventual business partner, Sexton and Flamsteed have developed a reputation for producing some of the region's finest examples of single vineyard wines.

From the vineyard to the final bottled wine, every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wines. The focus is on what the Yarra does best - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends - and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region's finest vineyards.

For three years running, Wine and Spirit Magazine have named them as one of the Top 100 wineries in the world, and Flamsteed capped off an amazing run by being named Gourmet Traveller Wine's 2016 Winemaker of the Year, another jewel in the Giant Steps crown. Their ultra modern cellar door is one of the must-visit experiences for any wine tourist stopping through the Yarra Valley.

From The Producer

In our obsession with Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs from great Pinot growing areas around the world, we have gone as far south (and as cold) as you can go in this country. Despite the cool temperatures, the sunlight hours are long and intense and we are intrigued by the depth of palate and colour that is possible from this landscape. While it is made with the Giant Steps gentle winemaking approach, the result is clearly a world apart in terroir.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)
ABV : 13.5%
Closure : Screw Cap

The Real Review

"A notably deeper colour than the Giant Steps Yarra pinots, looking more Central Otago than Yarra! The bouquet shows dark fruits rather than red, rich and ripe, with more stemmy whole-bunch overtones than the 2020 Yarra pinots, although they all have about 50% whole-bunch ferments. The wine is medium-bodied and has more weight and tannin than the Yarra wines, finishing with a conclusive grip which is in balance and simply calls for heartier food. It has less perfume and detail but more brawn. (From a vineyard near Tee Tree in the Coal Valley, 80-90m altitude and hungry soil, sand over limestone)." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

"Fruit from the Coal River Valley in Tassie, but made in the Yarra via the gentle way that defines Giant Steps. Yet the density and power of the place, the fruit intensity, comes through strongly. Dark cherries abound, but so too savoury, umami flavours of soy sauce and dried porcini with meaty reduction and spicy oak adding another layer. Full bodied with shapely tannins and a persuasive finish. A neat counterpoint to the Yarra Valley single-vineyard wines." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
