Description

The Sandown vineyard has been turning out proper Cabernet since the 1930s. Planted on deep sand and ironstone in Blewitt Springs, these dry-grown vines - Reynella clone, pre-phylloxera origin - are still on their own roots and still delivering fruit with real presence.

The 2023 vintage gave them room to breathe. A cool, steady season let the fruit hang longer without losing tension, and the result is a Cabernet that feels both deep and measured. Fermented wild, destemmed, and aged in French oak for 18 months, then bottled onsite with no fining or filtration.

In the glass it sits beautifully, all blackcurrant, bay leaf, earl grey and graphite, layered with cedar and spice. There’s structure here, but it’s not wearing its tannins on its sleeve - everything feels integrated, savoury, and built with a long view.

A rare expression of old-vine Cabernet from a site most people don’t know exists. This is McLaren Vale, yes - but not the version you’re used to.

Layers of blackcurrants, crushed blueberries and violets as well as cedar, mahogany and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and bright acidity, showing dark chocolate, plums and blackberry compote. Such a polished, restrained cabernet with plenty of years ahead in bottle. Drink or hold.”

“Off a 1930s planting of Reynella clone in Blewitt Springs. The '23 season was a wet and cool one, but the cabernets from this address have real import and depth, allied with a relatively lighter touch that is in keeping with the arc of this estate. Smashed blueberries and blackberries, mulberry, a flash of violet and ferrous minerality. There’s depth, a brood at present, with the structure made for the longer haul. Give it a couple of years to reveal itself fully.”

Clarendon Hills

Founded by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990, Clarendon Hills helped redefine Australian Shiraz. From the start, Bratasiuk focused on old-vine, single-vineyard reds from the elevated northern edge of McLaren Vale - bottled by site, clone, and variety, without shortcuts.

The cult flagship is Astralis, sourced from 1920s bush vines in Blewitt Springs. Powerful, structured and built to age, it set a new standard for South Australian Shiraz. But across the full range - Brookman, Sandown, Liandra and more - Clarendon Hills maps the complexity of McLaren Vale’s terroir with precision.

These are bold, cellar-worthy reds shaped with care: confident oak, fine tannins, and a focus on site above all. Clarendon Hills remains one of the country’s most important single-vineyard producers.
