Description

When a wine is named New Zealand Wine of the Year and scores a perfect 100 points from James Suckling, you know you are looking at something pretty special. The 2020 Bell Hill Limeworks Chardonnay is exactly that - a phenomenal, highly collectable release that, according to Mr. Suckling, could go toe-to-toe with the very best premier cru Puligny-Montrachet.

Grown on calcareous soils in a former lime quarry, this site imparts a distinctive, electric energy and intense acidity to the fruit. The winemaking is painstakingly precise for what is literally just a 2.7-barrel blend. The fruit - a mix of their 1999 (72%) and 2009 (28%) Limeworks plantings - was whole-bunch pressed and spent 12 months in French oak with 30% new barrels. It was then racked and rested in tank for a further nine months to refine its focus before bottling.

With a microscopic production of only 654 bottles and 96 magnums, it is as rare as it is brilliant. In the glass, it is a "curled-up spring" of restraint and mineral intensity. Suckling notes its incredible depth, power, and beautifully integrated phenolics. If you can secure a bottle, definitely give it time in the cellar to uncoil.

100 points & 2024 New Zealand Wine of the Year
"Wow. So tight and dense, showing incredible depth and power with phenolics that integrate beautifully into the wine."
- James Suckling

98 points
"Despite its density and power, it is poised and even relatively elegant. Surprisingly unevolved for its age, this astounding wine commands attention effortlessly and will reward a long sleep in the cellar with unmatched complexity. Grand vin."
- Stephen Wong (The Real Review)

100 points & 2024 New Zealand Wine of the Year - "Wow. So tight and dense, showing incredible depth and power with phenolics that integrate beautifully into the wine. Medium-bodied, it has great length, going on and on. Let this age if you can. A couple of barrels made. Special selection. Early 2025 release. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

98 points - "Reticent on the nose with brooding density which reluctantly releases hints of shortbread, spearmint, orchid and oyster shell with vigorous aeration. Bursting with saline tension which is barely contained within the notes of talcum, chalk and lemon zest, the palate enters silky before unfolding in a kaleidoscope of etched flavour which swings from tight and minerally to rich, toasty flavours of viennoiserie. Despite its density and power, it is poised and even relatively elegant. Surprisingly unevolved for its age, this astounding wine commands attention effortlessly and will reward a long sleep in the cellar with unmatched complexity. Grand vin." - Stephen Wong (The Real Review)

The Limeworks Chardonnay 2020 is a 2.7-barrel blend with 72% Limeworks 1999 and 28% Limeworks 2009. Harvested the 5th of April 2020, at 22.5 to 23 Brix, whole bunch pressed and aged in French oak with 30% new for 12 months followed by racking and blending and a further 9 months in tank before bottling on January 19th, 2022. The final wine has a pH of 3.48g/L, TA of 5.6g/L and 13.5% alcohol. 654 bottles and 96 magnums were produced.

It opens up with restraint and mineral intensity. Fresh herb, white florals lead to a greener edge with time in the glass. On the palate, a savoury note intensifies with a purity of fruit leading to citrus and lime. Harmonious and subtle, the chalkiness creating a tactile tension. A linear flow with salivating minerality, combined with notes of Mexican orange blossom and elder flower – a clean taut mineral line that has tension of fruit and balance -creating a lovely fine-lined flow that goes on to the finish. Super youthful, a curled-up spring ready to uncoil over more time in the bottle.
