About

About The Wine

The Nick Spencer Single Vineyard range celebrates the best of the best fruit that Nick Spencer sources from NSW High Country.

This Cabernet comes from a vineyard planted by Penfolds almost 20 years ago in Gundagai. It's a warm, dry site, planted on rich ironstone soils, that historically would have produced a rich, heady style of red. Nick picks the fruit early to maintain the character of the vineyard. It's produced a surprisingly elegant expression of Cabernet that should cellar beautifully for many years to come.

This is a brilliantly balanced wine - smooth, svelt and polished to perfection.

About Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer made a name for himself after a hugely successful decade-long stint as chief winemaker at Eden Road, before deciding in 2017 to take the plunge and start his very own label.

The Nick Spencer wines are, like Eden Road's, focused on the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

With Nick's access to some of the region's best fruit, his wines are all about balance, style and drinkability, with Nick's stamp of quality on top. Tiny volumes made and an exciting producer to watch out for!

From The Producer

The Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on the Tumblong vineyard in Gundagai. The vineyard was planted in the early 90’s by Penfolds, who recognised the deep, iron stone rich soils and dry, warm climate would be the perfect location for Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Historically considered a big, tannic red that required years of cellaring, the popularity of Cabernet Sauvignon has ebbed somewhat with the younger crowd in recent years – but the variety is making a comeback and this wine is for everyone.

"It’s a charming red. Fresh, almost crisp, feathery-light and yet satisfying. Tannic in a subtle way. It tastes of boysenberry more than blackcurrant, has a floral-herb-garden aspect, feels and tastes as though it’s been painted in watercolours, and is all-round enticing both to smell and to taste. There are sweet, roasted nut characters, almost like peanut brittle, though they’re whispered. Tannin. Tannin here is interesting. It’s about as lacy as they come; it’s in complete synch with the wine as a whole. Back to that word charming. That’s what this wine is. It is its own interpretation of cabernet." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
