Description

This is Shiraz from the Eden Valley in the highest calibre.

Michael Hall has crafted a stunning wine here, preserving every detail and nuance offered up by this small, low cropping vineyard in the Flaxman Valley.

It is a deeply fruited, seamlessly constructed wine of power and grace. Premium in every sense of the word. It's a top class example of Shiraz from this part of the world.

The Naimanya vineyard sits high in the tiny sub-region of Flaxman's Valley on soils of sandy loam, gravel and quartz over clay. At 520m elevation it is one of the highest Shiraz vineyards in South Australia.
Low winter rainfall with blustery weather during flowering resulted in a small crop. Hand-picked on 11th April, 80% destemmed, 20% whole-bunch fermented, all indigenous yeast, pressed to French oak (20% new), matured for 20 months in barrel. Unfined.

95 Points - "Quite restrained to begin, earthy/ dusty notes adding a grounding for the black cherry/ berry compote aromas to take their time. Delicious weight on the palate, the ripeness spot on, a fine balancing act with 20% whole bunches and 20% new oak over 20 months. Everything here in the right place. Cellaring should prompt further pleasures." - Tony Love (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 Points - "This is a tight, brooding release, all dark chocolate and blackberry, asphalt and aromatic/woodsy/clove-like spices, almost but not quite into saltbush territory. This again feels pushed in ripeness terms, though redcurrant characters help to brighten if not freshen the load, and it feels beautifully polished and soft as it glides through your mouth. The tannin here, really, is pretty special; fine-grained, velvety and assertive at once, though alcohol then thins the finish slightly. Weight and winemaking are not in question here: there's a lot of bold flavour, and its delivery is silky smooth." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

92 Points - "Deep ruby colour with a purple tint to the rim. Mulberry, bay leaf and iodine aromas. Dark and brooding with blackberry, olive tapenade and liquorice complexities throughout. Grainy tannins bring length and drive to finish." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

97 Points - "Michael Hall will challenge any preconceptions of Barossa Shiraz with this understated, elegant beauty. Sourced from the elevated granite belt in Flaxman's Valley (part of the Barossa subregion of Eden Valley), this fruit speaks deliberately in a soft voice. The pretty perfume owes thanks to 20% whole bunch berries in the ferment, although no aspect of this Shiraz is exaggerated. Indeed, the blackberry, redcurrant and mocha flavours are soft and lean, melding in silky, seamless weave, with 20 months' maturation in mostly old French oak." - David Sly (Decanter.com)

94 Points - "Plenty of spice wrapped into the black berry and red to dark plum fruits on the nose, with a more savoury graphite edge and some oak. The palate has good depth and marries rich flavours with poised shape and a smooth-honed texture to good effect. Holds the finish long, too." - Nick Stock (Gourmet Traveller WINE)

Michael Hall

It is Michael Hall's precise and methodical approach to winemaking which has made him stand out in the crowd of Barossa Valley winemakers.

A jewellery valuer in a previous life, his wines ooze clarity and attention to detail. They focus on small vineyards in the Barossa and Adelaide Hills that produce high-quality fruit. The wine are made with no shortcuts in the winery and an unwavering commitment to quality.

These are classically styled, refined wines designed to speak articulately of the Barossa and the surrounds. Michael's wines are top shelf.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
