Description

This is one of the single block offerings from S.C. Pannell's beloved Koomilya vineyard.

Where the DC block is all about ferocious tannin and structure, JC has a more supple and approachable personality. It's a wine where the tannins are beautifully ripe and meshed perfectly to the fruit.

For any truly great wine, balance is the key. This wine is bold yet perfectly balanced ensuring a long a distinguished life ahead.

This is one of the finest Shiraz Pannell has crafted to date.

A single block Shiraz from 47-year-old vines grown on ancient, dark grey slaty siltstone flecked with ironstone facing South West at an altitude of 120m. The JC Block is named for Jill Cant, the previous owner, and was the first block Stephen worked with on the vineyard during his tenure as Chief Red Winemaker at Hardy's.

It's never easy to describe the assault of aromas and flavours from the JC block Shiraz, for Stephen it's the true indication of a great wine. The aromas seem to be everywhere all at once. Fleeting moments of red cherry, then iodine, a moment of dried Australian native flowers, is that vanilla bavois? Now to Red gum honey and mahogany; Captivating, intense and delightful.

Hand harvested on the 24th of February, a week before the 2018 vintage. Crushed with 17% left as whole bunches, gently pressed after spontaneous fermentation and 14 days on skins. Settled in tank for 6 days before being sent to French oak puncheons and one barique, all second and third use, for malolactic fermentation. Racked twice during extended maturation in French oak puncheon. Bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

96 Points - "To stutter, the tannin quality; wow. Immediately impressive, the cinch and pucker, the length of fine, weaving, silty tannins and the cool acidity that supports the glide and gloss of the wine. Dark cherry, ripe plums, some mocha and ferrous elements with dried herb, paperbark tree and salt bush characters in the mix. Bouquet and palate in accord on these descriptions. It's concentrated but doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome, the palate resetting with each sip with only latent spice and dried cherry characters lingering. It feels distinctly 'Aussie red wine' but upper tier. What a superb wine." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

96 Points - "<span class="cs-reviewBody">Very deep purple-red colour; red berry/mulberry fruits, graphite and smoke. Powerful, concentrated, dense and very firm, tannic. An upright bearing. Tight, compact, long and yet also elegant. Tannins are dominating at this point. A stately wine of great potential that needs time." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)</span>

96 Points - "A stack of vibrant forest, berry and red rose notes pour from the glass of this elegant shiraz that has a lovely blood orange freshness. So much vitality and flinty energy driving the fresh fruit across the palate at a very brisk clip. Really long and focused finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - JamesSuckling.com

96 Points - "17% whole bunch; 2.1 tonnes/ha; zero new oak, all used French puncheons and barriques; 165 dozen made. A luscious yet not gaudy assemblage of aromas and flavours running all the way from red fruits to earth and bitter chocolate." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
