Description

This wine’s reputation isn’t just building – it’s already there. The 2019 Limited Release Shiraz has racked up 6 trophies and counting, including Best Red Wine of Show at the Hunter Valley Wine Show two years running. For a wine that flies a little under the radar outside NSW, that’s a statement.

Made from the best blocks across De Iuliis’ top vineyards – Steven, Talga Road and Lovedale Road – it’s a masterclass in blending and restraint. 2019 gave low yields, tiny berries and pristine fruit, and the result is a Shiraz with depth, drive and polish, but nothing overdone. It’s medium-bodied, classic Hunter, with just enough edge to keep it interesting, and structure to go long in the cellar.

Mike De Iuliis has taken this wine from insider favourite to legitimate benchmark. If you want to understand where modern Hunter Shiraz is at – this is it.

95 points
"Earthy, black fruit, ginger biscuits, dried mango perfume. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, acidity is balanced, tannin is thick and sooty, nice and ripe, with a liquorice finish of excellent length. Excellent wine. Plenty of time left in it too."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"A sumptuous interpretation of a warm year. Lots of extract, complemented by oak that, while still unresolved, should find its place in time. Blue and black fruits. A core of raspberry liqueur. Spice, sassafras and Hunter earth, driving long. Bury this and believe."
- Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Dark berry, black mineral, and cured meat aromas. Deep fruit with blackberry and iron tones. There’s a depth and intensity that is balanced by both fine tannins and a hint of freshening acidity, a wine of tension and persistence that will cellar for many years."
- Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

Award-winning and handcrafted, this small collection of iconic Hunter Valley wine styles is a selection of the best fruit from the most exceptional vintages. Less than 250 cases are produced and each bottle is individually numbered.

The Story
An outstanding vintage, 2019 was the third hot and dry year for the Hunter. Blocks of shiraz from our Steven, Talga Road and LDR vineyards were individually picked, processed and vinified. Stylistically, each of these vineyards produce a key component that we blend together to produce this outstanding wine.

The Wine
Bright and fresh cherry, plums and red currants framed by silky smoked tobacco characters. The sweet spice and earthiness is exceptionally balanced with fine-grained, toasty tannin. An intricately well-crafted wine that will develop beautifully with patience.

The Vintage
Low yields, small bunches and pristine fruit were the hallmarks of the 2019 vintage. A hot and dry growing and picking season resulted in high quality fruit coming off our vineyards.

The Potential
With its profound structure and promising complexity, this wine possesses a significant ageing potential, suggesting it will continue to evolve beautifully in your cellar. Consider acquiring a case to enrich your collection, affording you the rewarding experience of opening a bottle annually to witness its nuanced transformation over time.

The Match
Our 2019 Limited Release Shiraz is recognised as one of the best Hunter Shiraz wines, with multiple trophies and medals, including the Best Red Wine of Show at the Hunter Valley Wine Show in 2021 and 2022. This award-winning wine pairs perfectly with a dry-aged tomahawk steak, served with pomme mousseline, green beans, and a rich jus.

De Iuliis

De Iuliis - pronounced [de uli ~ iss] - is one of the brightest stars from the Hunter Valley.

Owners Joss and Anna De luliis first planted vines on their estate in the famous Lovedale sub-region back in 1990, but it wasn’t until their son Mike got involved after graduating from the world-renowned Roseworthy campus (Adelaide University) in 1999 that things really took off.

Today Mike crafts an excellent array of site-specific wines that are a very good modern representation of what the Hunter Valley has to offer.
