About The wine
Crafted from 100% Merlot, Liu is unusual for the region but a quick look at the raft of positive reviews shows this is a wine that has captured the hearts of a wide and varied crowd.
The fruit was picked early and fermented and raised in amphora. The result is complex and spicy fruit, nuanced aromas and a slightly natural lean whilst maintaining perfect structure and clarity.
It will prove a pleasant surprise for a broad spectrum of drinkers, we love it and think you will too.
About Castello Dei Rampolla
Castello dei Rampolla is a 100-acre estate in Santa Lucia in Faulle, in the valley of the “Conca d’Oro”, south of Panzano in Chianti. According to Christian and Orthodox tradition it bears the name of a Saint who came there around the time of the winter solstice, so as to bring light and life to the Earth.
It has been owned by the Di Napoli Rampolla family since the beginning of the 18th century. They have cultivated their vineyards biodynamically since 1994 and strive to produce great wines that reflect the philosophy of the winery and the place they come from.

The soil’s freshness and the good agronomic practices, guarantee a gradual maturation of the grapes also in a very hot season.

"The Castello dei Rampolla 2019 Liù is a relatively new wine (the first vintage made was the 2018) and a pure expression of Merlot. The wine is generously endowed with lots of fruit flavor and a distinctive punchiness that adds a bright and lifted quality to the bouquet. It sports a mid-weight approach with plenty of summer fresh cherry, plum and other purple fruits. It's hard not to feel immediately attracted to this wine, especially given its very vivid and bright personality. "The 2019 Merlot Liu' is another outrageously beautiful wine from Rampolla. Deep, inky and explosive, the 2019 possesses tremendous energy to match its purity of fruit. Blueberry, spice, leather, menthol and espresso build into the potent, tannic finish. Readers will find a serious Merlot packed with fruit and structure. Rampolla planted Merlot in 2000 and 2003 to soften Sammarco, but the vines turned out to be more productive than expected, giving birth to the Liu'. The 2019 was aged in cement and terracotta. I am not entirely sure how the Liu' will mature, but I also doubt that will be much a concern for the vast majority of readers."- Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
"Love this wine. Earth, new leather, black olives, blueberry and fresh blackberry, with a dried flower perfume above. Medium-bodied, thick with brushed suede tannin, plum and earth, and again that floral perfume wafting about. It has fairly fresh acidity, but it’s all about those terracotta tannins and slightly wild ‘natural’ feel. Finish is long with rugged grip. Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!
Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.
Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.
Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.
I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 02 8376 8775 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.
Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.
Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
