Description

Yeringberg is one of the great family-owned estates of the Yarra Valley. The heritage and history that this site holds for the de Pury family stretches back more than 100 years, theirs is one of the great wine/farming stories of the region.

Their Cabernet blend is their most iconic wine, a wine that sits well and truly amongst the Yarra Valley's greats. A refined, mid-weight blend of all five Bordeaux red varieties, grown side-by-side, laden with fully integrated luscious new French oak, this is an elegant Cabernet belnd of the highest order.

Whether you drink it now or in several decades time, this is a wine you will remember.

Deep red colour with a good tint of purple, the bouquet briary, cedary and tobacco-scented with charm and detail. The palate is medium to full-bodied and elegantly framed, with stylish lines and lovely balance. Red and darker fruit flavours, dried herbs and floral notes. Very long carry. It has good early drinkability and will age well. A good example of how multiple varieties can result in a complex wine, even when young.

The 2018 is deep purple in colour, with an inviting nose of briar, ink, crushed blackcurrants and black plums, lightly-veneered in cedary oak. It’s medium-bodied with a superfine mouth-feel and great intensity of dark fruit flavours, perhaps with a hint of anise. Lip-smacking balance and easy drying tannins carry an ultra-long finish. Superb.

A gentle Yeringberg, with its heady fragrance of mulberries, florals, cedary oak and the kitchen cupboard full of spices and herbs. So enticing. The palate is medium-bodied, with astonishingly fine, powdery tannins, finishing long and pure. As usual, an elegant wine that delights now and will do more so in a few years' time.

Beautiful perfume of dried flowers, sweet tobacco and spice, blackcurrant and redcurrant, even almond meal. Dense and dark, with a smattering of dried herb, ripe cherry, crisp acidity, firm grainy tannin, and a distinctly ‘mineral’ and savoury finish of exemplary length. It’s a textbook example of superb Yarra Valley Cabernet.

Cabernet Sauvignon 58%, Cabernet Franc 13%, Merlot 11%, Petit Verdot 10%, Malbec 8%. As always, our Bordeaux blend is a perfect example of the saying that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The 2018 vintage is a great example, seamlessly combining depth and power with purity, elegance and finesse. An imposing nose of cassis, violets, plum and roasted peppers, with aromas of graphite, cigar box, cedar and bay – everything in place, well controlled, perfectly proportioned. The palate, powerful this vintage, opens in typically generous and fleshy style, with ripe black fruits, plummy Merlot plushness, and wonderful floral lift, while the ample, well-knit tannins provide savoury shape and structure. The palate finishes with effortless length and complexity. This is a wine to enjoy now, but as always, a wine that will reward cellaring over 15 to 20 years. – Sandra de Pury

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
