About The Wine

Pete Schell continues to explore the possibilities with Shiraz/Syrah in his beloved Barossa Valley, and this vibrant and lifted Syrah is a gorgeous drink.

Designed as a more understated and elegant version of Barossa Shiraz, Schell picks fruit from a couple of different, cooler sites in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The grapes are picked earlier to retain freshness and perfume, before seeing a mixture of stainless steel and wooden and concrete fermenters.

Wild and savoury yet soft and sumptuous, this is Barossa Shiraz unlike we usually see it.

Interesting, flavour-packed and moreish, this is another winner from this superstar winemaker.

About Spinifex

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley, and very much a pioneer of the changing direction of this famous region.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Pete’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region; they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.  These are brilliant Barossa wines.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Typical of the year, the wine is denser, fuller and more deeply flavoured than the previous vintage.

Made from a blend of vineyards located across the eastern Barossa foothills, Moppa and Eden Valley, the wine displays plenty of deep, plush dark black fruit but without the fatness and bulk of the more traditional style. The fruit wraps around a backbone of beautifully integrated tannin from 35% whole bunch fermentation. This is as pure an expression of 2018 Barossa Shiraz that you will ever come across.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"On the nose, bright red cherry leads off, followed by subtle gamey notes and red licorice and pepper. The palate has red fruits, anise, subtle gameyness and spice on the palate, all rounded out with integrated fine grained tannins." - Artisans of the Barossa

The Wine Front

"This is a Barossa and Eden combo of six parcels of vineyard. Incredible value, by my matrix, for this wine. All class, and holds the heft of riper fruit and booziness well. This could be your buy of the year. Choc-cherry scents with brambly notes, earthiness, undergrowth and autumnal mushroom/leafiness too. I like this. Glossy textured, spicy, fine tannins rippling through darker berry fruits, a lick of mocha, but a green-herb/dried-herb note through the wine. Elegant, svelte, fine and very long with an assertively spicy finish. Definitively ‘syrah’ not ‘shiraz’ of this region, if you get my drift. Excellent." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Brilliant

Gotta admit I've become a bit of a Spinifex fanboi. Mr. Schell has once again built a winner. He's done that thing where it's called a "Barossa Shiraz" but a slightly lighter take on the theme. Not super light, no no no, but tightened up a tad. Still lots of that solid Barossa Shiraz fruit that I love so much. You certainly wouldn't call it a "cool climate" Shiraz. It has little of that pepper/spiciness.

Brace yourself shopping cart, there's about to be a click-fest!
