About This Wine

Paying homage to the pinnacle of Ricky’s career, the Ashes, this wine showcases winemaker Ben Riggs bread and butter, McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Ben has built his name on these wines, with great relationships with growers across the region - he has sourced some exceptional fruit for this wine. This is quite a powerful and full-bodied expression of the varietal. Distinctively McLaren Vale, with sweet berries and darker fruit on the nose. The wine is soft, with warm tannins on the palate layered with rich berry fruits, and lots of spice.

This wine speak so much of both the region, and the winemaker. The wine is everything it sets out to be; a well-made, quality, Vale Shiraz, at a cracker of a price.

About Ponting Wines

For any athlete, the end of their career brings a lot of questions, let alone when you’ve reached the pinnacle of your sport, and are considered one of the best to ever play the game.

For former Australian Cricket captain Ricky Ponting, the answer was wine. Ponting Wines is a new venture, with a focus on creating the style of wines that appeal to Ricky and his wife Rianna.

Teaming up with McLaren Vale winemaker Ben Riggs (Mr. Riggs), this project is not about cynically slapping the Ponting name on wines and pretending he had something to do with the finished wines (we’re looking at you Shane Warne).

Sourcing fruit from Tasmania, Ricky’s home state, and South Australia where Ben is based, Ponting wines is all about making approachable, punter (no pun intended) friendly wines.

The Wine Front

"Good drink, sloshy, dark fruited red of spice and warmth and generosity. Dark berries, cassis, clove and cinnamon spice with touches of sweet earth and new leather. A bit rough up front, let’s you know who’s boss in the glass, then the finish is gummy and a little saline and pretty with sweet fruit. Has that hearty sense of gluggability that some bolder reds have. Good stain of choc-mocha flavour to finish. Does the trick." Mike Bennie (Wine Front)

The Real Review

"A medium-depth ruby-red in colour, this young red has an attractive nose of some complexity. Earthy and charry notes attractively surround plum and bitter chocolate aromas. It has good intensity and plenty of flavour interest, finishing in good balance with fine, dry tannins. Good value." Ralph Kyte-Powell (The Real Review)

I'm no wine expert, but I do love red wine... and cricket. I really enjoyed this and will buy it again. Mulberries, ummm, oak, errr, hints of something else.
