Description

An ode to the founding father of the winery, stonemason and wheelwright Johann Christian Henschke, this Shiraz comes off a vineyard planted in 1968 by his great-grandson Cyril.

This is very much an Eden Valley Shiraz, on the lighter side of full-bodied, its full of dark berries, brambles, spice and so much more. Dark and inky in the glass, it’s a wine that takes time to both open and fully explore its depth and layers.

In its youth this isn’t a wine to tackle and mess about with unless you have some rich protein to help cut through its dense structure. Rather, like so many great wines from Henschke, have patience and thou shall be rewarded.

This comes from the Cyril Henschke vineyard, planted in 1968 and matured in 10% new oak (95/5% French/American) hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending. A couple of special blocks of shiraz. 2017 is a great year for vineyard expression.

97 Points - "Matured 18 months in 21% new (65% French, 35% American) hogsheads. Planted 1968 by Cyril Henschke. Exceptional fragrance; balanced on the first sip to the finish and aftertaste, and glides across the palate. Some oak complexity. A perfect model of medium-bodied shiraz; juicy and supple." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

95 Points - "Deep, dark red with a trace of purple remaining, and a bouquet of pepper/spice, ironstone and smoky/graphite-like earthiness, the palate full bodied and firm, robust and firm with dried-herb and leather nuances. Long-lasting finish. Excellent wine." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 Points - "Shiraz from the Wheelwright vineyard in Eden Valley; 18 months in 65/35% French/American oak (21% new). A relatively new addition to the Henschke quiver and one that is fast becoming a favourite of mine. Pure mulberry, blueberry and blackberry fruits with hints of fine spice, sage, bay leaf, licorice, dark chocolate and crushed stone. Firm granitic tannins melt into the wine, pure and true with a fine, lively cadence and superb fruit density and detail on display. Drink or hold." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 Points - "Cooler and lifted red, supple texture, lots of ripe and fresh red berry fruits, twiggy spice, alpine herb notes and licks of kirsch and cassis in the mix. Some lavender and violet notes, wintergreen herbs too. Fine, silky tannins wrap the wine beautifully. It finishes with dark cherry and some mocha choc-savoury elements too. Pretty wine, with good heft, bound up well." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 Points - "The Wheelwright and the Cyril Henschke Vineyards are adjacent and rest at an elevation of 470 meters above seal level, numbering them among some of the highest vineyards in the region. The 1.6-hectare single vineyard from which the fruit hails is planted on a combination of sandy loam and clay, over a bedrock of mica schist and faces in a north through west to south aspect. The 2018 The Wheelwright Single Vineyard Shiraz is 100% Shiraz, matured in a combination of new (21%) and seasoned (79%) French oak (65%) and American oak (35%) hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. According to the Barossa Old Vine Charter, an "old vine" is equal to or greater than 35 years of age. I love Eden Valley Syrah/Shiraz for its ability to convey fresh raspberry, black tea, crushed rocks and licorice, each in equal measure, not to mention inflections of sage, bay leaf and even rosemary. The wines are elegant (even when produced in a full-throttle style, which this is not) and age gracefully. Eden Valley looks sensational in this excellent vintage, the 2018 The Wheelwright Single Vineyard Shiraz especially so." - Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
