Description

Tyrrell's just do things right. And they might do Semillon more right than anything else.

The Vat 1 is already wonderfully complex with youthful flavours of citrus zest, lemon curd, and semi-mature characters of toast, almond and honey. The seamless and long palate flows with pristine waxiness and intense, primary fruit. What a wine. The most highly decorated white wine of the last 50 years in Australia, Vat 1 is a true blue Aussie icon.

Grab yourself a little piece of Australian wine history.

"While I enjoy the open-knit approaches to crafting semillon across the region, this remains the bulletproof benchmark... Descriptives, ineffable. The length, justifiable. Bury this."
- Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

96+ points - "There’s a light powdery texture, which seems to be a hallmark of the 2017 vintage. Then the finish. So long. A phenomenal Vat 1."

"Fills every corner of the mouth effortlessly: an outstanding semi-mature semillon. Superior concentration and persistence here. This is ageing very slowly and will be long-lived."

Tyrrell's - VAT 1 Semillon from Tyrrell's on Vimeo.

Our Vat 1 Semillon is only ever made using fruit from our best old-vine, dry-grown vineyards. These blocks, the oldest of which was planted in 1923, feature sandy, free-draining soils that are ideal for growing Semillon and give the Vat 1 its unique character.

After being hand-picked in the early hours of the morning, the grapes were sorted in the vineyard to ensure that all of the fruit that arrived at the winery was in pristine condition. The fruit was then very lightly crushed and pressed before undergoing a relatively cool fermentation. The wine spent only a short time on its lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness; no oak was used in either fermentation or maturation. This is a wine that combines elegance with power. It has lifted citrus aromas and a seamless palate structure that shows the powerful fruit core that we’ve come to expect in the Vat 1.

97 points - "While I enjoy the open-knit approaches to crafting semillon across the region, this remains the bulletproof benchmark. Even here, there have been endeavours toward greater accessibility, with some lees inflection. A meld of the finest dry-grown plots conferring a carapace of talc, sandy mineral and effusive acidity that is, to be frank, indomitable. Descriptives, ineffable. The length, justifiable. Bury this." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

96+ points - "I asked baby-faced winemaker Chris Tyrrell which vintage he thought 2017 most resembled for Semillon, and he ventured 2006. Or I think he did? Or maybe I just thought it resembled 2006? Anyway, both vintages had many days where the temperature pushed over 40c. The 2017 vintage came with healthy yields, and crop levels matching 1999 and 2009, with a high extraction rate (amount of juice per berry).Tasting the wines, and pitching my mind back over a decade, I can see the similarities to 2006 in how they taste as youngsters.

Intense limey goodness here, which will roll on to become a classic white Hunter Burgundy with bottle age: a subtle white flower perfume tells part of tale. Perfectly pitched, intense and crunchy, flavoursome too, with weight but no heaviness. There’s a light powdery texture, which seems to be a hallmark of the 2017 vintage. Then the finish. So long. A phenomenal Vat 1. " - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

98 points - "Bright, light yellow colour with intense lemongrass aromas, hints of straw and wax, barely any toast evident at this stage, the palate intense and long, concentrated and driving, without bigness or heft but light on its feet and super-precise. Fills every corner of the mouth effortlessly: an outstanding semi-mature semillon. Superior concentration and persistence here. This is ageing very slowly and will be long-lived." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

There’s no denying that Hunter Valley Semillon is one of Australia’s great iconic wines. And no-one reaches the heights with the variável quite as much as Tyrrell’s. This is superbly fine, beautifully crisp with flavours of lemon and citrus. It reveals its layers slowly through its subtle delicacy. A stunning wine with simple seafoods, it’s magnificent now but if you are patient, it becomes a glorious, honeyed, rich masterpiece.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
