Description

The Stevens vineyard fruit has been made by the Tyrrell family since the 1993 vintage.

Tyrrell patriarch, Bruce Tyrrell, says it's the vineyard that first inspired the Single Vineyard bottling program at Tyrrell's due to the unique quality of fruit this vineyard delivers year-in-year-out. The red soils of this site yield minerally, chalky, powerful Semillon which cellars beautifully.

Made the same way as the iconic Vat 1 Semillon, this wine offers exceptional value for money and is now one of the most recognisable Semillons in the Hunter Valley.

The Stevens vineyard is the southern-most of our Semillon vineyards and features a combination of light sand and red clay soils. The vineyard is dry grown with the earliest plantings being 1911.
The 2017 vintage was one of the best in recent memory and produced high quality Semillons with exceptional balance between power and elegance. Solid rains in winter and spring meant that vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested. Harvested in the early hours of the morning, the fruit was lightly crushed and pressed, before a relatively cool fermentation. The wine spent minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.
A richer, softer incarnation of Stevens Semillon. The palate is generous and round, full of ripe citrus intensity, with the classic waxy character that aged Semillons are known for. Drinking very well at six years of age, but will evolve gracefully over the next five to ten years.

95 Points - "This 2017 Stevens Semillon is the third in a trio of 2017s before me, and to say that the best was saved until last is contentious: they're all good. But this is mouthfilling and enveloping; the fruit billows around the middle palate and streams out through the long finish. It is savoury and rich and layered with sandalwood, wood shavings (no oak here—just a comment on the fresh smell of shaved/sanded timber), fresh ocean air, green apples, lemongrass and crushed shell. The wine is completely different from the others, and it's a thrill." - Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

95 Points - "Light sand and red clay, the origin. A richer give than the meagre white sands of Belford, its majestic sibling. All the better for youthful exuberance, without quite the tactile feel and tensile vibrancy. Optimal drinking! Apricot pith, quince, quinine and citrus balm. Taut, but a far more open weave across the mid palate than others in the family. The Belford, the intellectual nerd. This, the crowd favourite. Visceral and absolutely delicious." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 Points - "Crisp, fresh, slight grassiness, light powdery soft chalkiness through it, and more to lemon than lime in the flavour department. Good length. Zips along. Fresh squeezed lemon juice sweetness plays out on the finish. How’s the purity? Tasty now too, though better later." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Ready to drink Semillon

This wine is ready to drink now but still has many years left ahead of it. The acidity has softened sightly and the palate is now more rounded with plenty of zing and citrus fruit coming through. It is perfect with shellfish right now.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
