Description

The HVD Semillon is made from a select parcel of fruit planted on the old Hunter Valley Distillery site in 1908.

These old vines produce luxurious Semillon with a richness and softness that is unique to the site. It's a wine that ages superbly out to 15 or 20 years from vintage but is equally easy to enjoy as a younger wine.

The HVD vineyard is on song in this release. One for now or for the cellar, that's the beauty of HVD.

96 points
"Long, tactile and pummelling of intensity. This is a late-released Hunter semillon, barely nudging middle age. Strap yourself in, turn Eddie Van Halen up to full volume and get ready. Stevens, the exuberant. Belford, the intellectual nerd. This, the louche with class."
- Ned Goodwine MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

Textbook HVD Semillon showing a lifted, generous floral aromatic and just beginning to show a hint of bottle age complexity. The palate is vibrant with an abundance of mouth filling citrus fruit, typical of the vineyard with a fine boned acidity with an almost chalky finish.

Situated between two dry creek beds, the HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) vineyard has ideal soils for Semillon; free draining sandy soils over coarse river sand. The vines are dry grown and were planted in 1908. The 2017 growing season was one of the best in recent memory, and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant the vines had constant access to water. The warmer weather in the New Year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when harvested. Handpicked in the early hours of the morning, the fruit was lightly crushed and pressed before a relatively cool fermentation. Then the wine spent minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

94 Points - "Fennel, a little pineapple, ripe lime, lots of flavour, acidity sits a bit on the outside, good finish. Maybe a little bit lactic. Still young, and will most likely come around. I suspect a wine that's in-between days. Drink 2024-2030" - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 Points - "The HVD (Hunter Valley Distilling) Vineyard was planted in 1908, and the fruit for this 2017 HVD Semillon was sourced from the Sign Post block within it. The 2017 vintage was an exceptional season for Semillon in the Hunter, and the nose here leads with sun-drenched honeysuckle, green apple skins, caper brine and crushed shells. In the mouth, the wine is gentle swaying on the brink of evolution; it's still so tight and glassy, but it's starting to hint at the enveloping texture and complexity that will develop over the next couple of years. A marvel. Highly recommended." - 95+pts, Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

96 points - "A site sandwiched between sandy creek beds, dry grown and planted in 1908. Set the compass, because this is a paean to a rich heritage as much as a looking glass into the brightest of futures. Lightweight. A skitter of lemon zest, tamarind and quince, bulwarked with a talcy mineral pungency and a juicy acid kit. Long, tactile and pummelling of intensity. This is a late-released Hunter semillon, barely nudging middle age. Strap yourself in, turn Eddie Van Halen up to full volume and get ready. Stevens, the exuberant. Belford, the intellectual nerd. This, the louche with class." - Ned Goodwine MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
