Description

The Semillon on the Belford vineyard was planted back in 1933 and is one of the finest sites in the northern part of the Hunter for the region's signature grape.

It's a vineyard that has a signature purity and subtlety that presents in its Semillon, almost irrespective of the vagaries of vintage.

Released as a semi-mature wine so you can drink now or cellar for another decade-plus, should you wish to. This is one of the jewels in the Single Site crown from the Tyrrell family and a little piece of Hunter history that has stood the test of time.

97 Points
"The top drawer, with few peers. Belford, a little more reticent and stonier than its Stevens brethren... Taut, linear and of pixelated detail and precision. Wait with bated breath."
- Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

96+ Points
"Belford is a great vineyard, and the wines have a distinct personality... Clarity. Intensity. Sails through the mouth. Classic Belford."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 Points
"The immediate drinking qualities are outstanding. A refined and intense Semillon, young for its years."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Belford vineyard was planted in 1933. The soil is light and sandy – the consistency of talcum powder – for the top 50 centimetres. It is the northern-most of the Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley vineyards.

The 2017 vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced Semillons of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant that vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested. The grapes were handpicked and sorted in the vineyard. Once arriving at the winery the fruit was very lightly crushed and pressed with a small percentage of stalks. After a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

Intensely lifted citrus notes, this wine has the robust, richer, almost chalky palate that is commonly associated with the Belford vineyard that is balanced by a soft, clean acid profile, giving the wine its great length.

"I need to turn the music down. Take a breath. Strap in for a fidelitous ride across the ebbs and flows of Hunter regality, when I taste this suite of semillon. The top drawer, with few peers. Belford, a little more reticent and stonier than its Stevens brethren. Talc, wet pebbles strewn across a stream, lemongrass and citrus balm. But the texture, the opus. Still in need of time. Taut, linear and of pixelated detail and precision. Wait with bated breath." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

96+ Points -
"Belford is a great vineyard, and the wines have a distinct personality. White peach, lemon, a little talc-like perfume. Powerful and coiled up, but a big mid-palate hit, almost succulent, then onto a roaring finish of superb length, with powdery texture trailing in its wake. Clarity. Intensity. Sails through the mouth. Classic Belford." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 Points
"Light, bright yellow hue with an intense lemony/Sunlight Soap aroma, some green-herb nuances in the background, while the taste is light-bodied and crisply cut, delicate and balanced with a medium length finish. The immediate drinking qualities are outstanding. A refined and intense Semillon, young for its years." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
