Description

The Real Review’s Sparkling Wine of the Year

Quartz Reef has been leading the charge for Central Otago sparkling wine for more than two decades, and this 2017 Blanc de Blancs shows exactly why. Made entirely from Chardonnay grown on their biodynamically farmed Bendigo vineyard, it comes from a cool, steady season that delivered pristine fruit with natural acidity and drive.

After whole-bunch pressing, the base wine was fermented in stainless steel and old oak before tirage. It then spent several years on lees, building texture and complexity while keeping its fine, persistent bead.

The wine is focused and elegant, with citrus and green apple at its core, layered with hints of brioche and roasted nut. Fresh, dry and beautifully balanced, it’s a benchmark example of how serious traditional-method sparkling can be in Central Otago.

Persistent mousse. Soaring floral, white pepper and chalk aromas on the nose. This has incredible tension and youth for its age, taut and crystalline in texture with evidently high acidity but no tartness. The citrus and floral flavours are delicate and laced through with oystershell, building rather than fading towards the long, laser-like finish. A reprise of floral and subtle brioche/pastry notes closes the loop on this fantastically reverberant sparkling wine which has a long life ahead of it as it gains more complexity and savoury layers in bottle.

While drinking superbly now, this needs time in cellar. For sure. It’s a green apple, not quite there at ripeness, a crunch of that, resonating, scintillating, tart and supremely long and fine. A lick of nuttiness, a bit of fino sherry, but geez, this is tightly wound and energetic and bright. Fine detail galore, one for the ages. Salon 1996? Yeah, if you know you know.

Made from 100% organic and biodynamic chardonnay from Bendigo. Aged for five years in bottle on the yeast lees. Rich, creamy wine with pronounced baguette-like yeast lees character. Delicate, complex sparkling, one of NZ's best.

The 2017 Methode Traditionelle Blanc de Blancs is layered and textural, and after five years on lees, this is absolutely expected. The wine flows and undulates across the palate and speaks of lemon pith, juniper, white peach, green apple, preserved citrus and brine. The mousse in the mouth is plump and pillowy, with generally very fine beading. It is concentrated and flavorsome, and it penetrates the palate long after the wine has gone. Light on its feet though, make no mistake, there is plenty of time to go before it sleeps. 12% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

The ‘crown jewel’ in our sparkling collection; this exquisite wine exudes style and finesse. Refreshing citrus notes with an irresistible aroma of a pâtisserie. Tantalizing lime and chamomile with precise acidity that dances on the palate. Fine persistent mousse will capture and engage your senses.

An exceptional example of world class Méthode Traditionnelle, handcrafted in Central Otago, New Zealand.
