About The Wine

Marcus Schulz was the first grower to sell Dave Powell fruit back in 1994 to start his then fledgling label, Torbreck.

Now, more than two decades on, the releationship is stronger than ever. The Schulz vineyard located in the Koonunga Hill parish is the only vineyard in the Powell & Son stable that isn't managed by Dave and Callum. They see Marcus as one of the Barossa's best farmers with five generations of Barossa grape-growing knowledge pulsing through his veins. He knows these vines like the back of his hand and farms them with all the care and attention in the world.

The wine from this block is an imposing Shiraz of incredible stature. It's the full Barossa show - inky, brooding and impossibly long on flavour. It's the perfect wine for a special occasion.

About Powell & Son

Powell & Son is a joint operation between father and son team, David and Callum Powell.

David was the spearhead behind the Torbreck juggernaut that took the world by storm in the 1990s. After leaving the Torbreck name behind, David and Callum partnered up to establish their own small operation focused around expressing some of the Barossa and Eden Valley's most precious vineyards.

With his decades-long relationships with these Barossa Valley growers as the foundation of the project, David has taken a step back in terms of the winemaking. It's now up to Callum to do the heavy lifting in the cellar, bringing these powerhouse expressions of Barossa Valley reds to life and writing the next chapter in the story of the Powell family and their beloved Barossa Valley.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Marcus Schulz is a fifth generation Barossan grape grower of German descent. Marcus was Dave’s first ever grower and first sold him fruit in 1994, which was Shiraz from his old vine site in Koonunga Hill. This is the only single vineyard wine produced from a vineyard not managed by Callum and Dave Powell, but could not be in more capable hands than those of Marcus Schulz.

Koonunga Hill is reaching the North-Western boundary of the Barossa Valley. The soils are rich red-yellow clays with a veneer of white sand as topsoil. The sands provide beautiful perfumed aromatics of blue fruits while the rich clays provide structure and depth to the wine.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

“Intense aromas of blueberry, blackberry jam, vanilla musk and olive tapenade with subtle notes of cured charcuterie, graphite and tar. The palate reveals a soft, sensual, mouth coating texture. Marcus Schulz describes the wines from his vineyard as “neck oil”, which is in reference to the sleek, mouth coating tannins and brooding dark fruits. The Schulz Shiraz speaks of true Northern Barossa style: rich, deep and opulent.” - Callum Powell, winemaker

    Sensational

Heavy pepper all the way through the palate. Excellent depth with phenomenal layering of rich dark fruit. Big and bold but exquisitely soft tannins round it out. For a 2017 it drank superbly but given another 3-5 years (or more) it would be an absolute gem.
