Description

The 'Riserva' releases from Ar.Pe.Pe are special wines only produced in growing seasons deemed to be truly exceptional. For the last 15 years, there have only been five seasons deemed worthy enough to create the Riserva cuvees, with this, the 2016, being the most recent of them.

The Rocce Rosse (translating to 'red rocks') comes from iron rich schist and granite soils in the Sassella sub-region of Valtellina. The fruit sees a long maceration time, sometimes 100+ days if deemed necessary, followed by extended ageing in big oak botti and bottle.

When, in spite of yourself, you are forced to step aside in order not to cause any harm, try at least to take with you the hope that one day you’ll see your dreams come true. This is how we remember Arturo, when he stubbornly decided to create his Riserva right in the heart of Sassella. He completely renewed the vineyard at 400 metres above sea level, which he had inherited from his father, and decided to produce a wine that could be make only with Nebbiolo from the Alps grapes, which they simply called Chiavennasca in those days. The year was 1984.

Six years later, he decided the time had come to find a name for it and he and his wife Giovanna opted for Rocce Rosse. The colour of these “red rocks” was that of the passion that fired him to search for the bloody, iron-like flavour of the land of his ancestors, so indelibly impressed on his memory that no flash of modernity could ever have changed.

And indeed, in a glass of Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Rocce Rosse DOCG you can relish the flavour of a root that challenge the granite with its elegance and sincerity, while a gentle breeze rises up from Lake Como and refreshes the valley.

Arpepe is an historic estate based in Valtellina in the very north of Italy, specialising in Nebbiolo, with an alpine twist.

Arpepe, is often written as Ar.Pe.Pe. which are the initials of the modern founding father, Arturo Pelizzatti Perego. The family have been growing Nebbiolo here since 1860 but Arturo founded the modern incarnation in 1984. The variety is known locally as Chiavennasca.

The family now have over 13 hectares within Valtellina Superiore DOCG area, around the areas of Sassella, Grumello and Inferno, making a bewildering amount of different Nebbiolo. They all reflect an overarching philosophy of viticultural practice in synergy with the rhythms of the Alps, and slow, long maturation in the cellar.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.
