2014 Valenciso Rioja Reserva

Rioja, Spain

One of the benchmarks of modern Rioja. Old vines, hand-picked, low-toast oak. A great example of Rioja Reserva.

About The Wine

Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso are setting a new benchmark for modern Rioja.

Their Rioja Reserva is their most notable wine. It comes from a multitude of plots around Haro, farmed with integrity, with the youngest vine selected planted over 60 years ago. The wine is fermented in concrete then aged in top quality, low toast French oak allowing their glorious old-vine fruit to shine.

This is everything a Rioja Reserva should be - powerful and yet poised, robust and yet not rambunctious. It's a wine of immense stature and will mature beautifully for many years to come.

About Valenciso

Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso are setting a new benchmark for modern Rioja from their beautiful winery in Ollauri, in the north of the Rioja Alta region. They began their boutique operation 1998 with a focus on small production, old vines farmed organically and a more gentle winemaking philosophy, with a focus on elevage in concrete rather than oak. Their results over a short period of time have been outstanding and seen them become lauded as one of the premier small-scale producers of the region. The name Valenciso is a portmanteau of their names.

From The Producer

As always, this is handpicked Tempranillo from the clay/limestone soils around Haro.

The grapes come from 17 plots, including Villalba, Rodezno, Briones and Ollauri, all managed under strict culture raisonnée guidelines and cropped at well below the regional limits. The youngest vines that make the grade here are 60 years old! The Reserva naturally ferments in cement vats and the wine is then aged for 19 months in mostly low-toast Radoux, French oak barriques (roughly one-third new). In recent vintages 10% of the wine has been raised in low-toast Caucasus oak, further lessening the wine's (already minimal) oak impact.

Following aging in barrel, the wine was transferred back to concrete vats to settle for a further 24 months before release. Luis and Carmen find the wine clarifies so well in concrete that there is no need to fine or filter the wine before bottling. With a modern-classical profile combining freshness, elegance and depth, this is an outstanding, multi-layered and complex release from Valenciso.

Decanter Magazine

"A classic Tempranillo of Rioja character. Perfectly ripe black fruits, with toasty notes from the French oak. In the mouth it is suavely textured, well grained, with cherry and some more savoury notes to finish." - Pedro Ballestero Torres MW, Sarah Jane Evans MW, Alvaro Ribalta MW ( Panel Tasting)
