Description

This is one absolutely fascinating wine. As the maker calls it, "one of those rare vinous once-in-a-lifetime, money-cannot-buy (well… except it kind of can) experiences..."

BK had intended this to be part of his flagship Chardonnay blend back in 2008 but just wasn't totally happy with how the oak in this barrel sat in the final blend.

So, he rolled the barrel into the back of the shed and after topping it for a few years, basically forgot about it for over a decade. A slight flor developed over the juice, protecting it as the wine slowly matured. It turned nutty and saline, golden and viscous, but kept the racy acid line that is the signature of BK's Chardonnays.

It's essentially a little slice of Jura winemaking born in the Adelaide Hills. 150 bottles total in existence. The rarest of rare gems. One for the trainspotters out there and unlike anything you've ever tasted before in Australia.

"Salty and flor-driven saline. Jura, the archetype... Stunning! Knee-jerking and thrill-seeking! Like an early model Alfa Romeo or a Sydney dance party before the nanny state cabal."

This is one of those rare vinous once-in-a-lifetime, money-cannot-buy (well… except it kind of can) experiences. The year is 2008, Obama is making his first run for the Big House, the Kings of Leon are top of the Hottest 100, the Hottest 100 is still on January 26th, and Ma Fleur is born – our flagship Chardonnay… but for this one barrel. It was new French oak and, frankly, we just didn’t love the toast and so back it went, way back to the recesses of the barrel room. For a time, it was topped annually and then – as the years rolled on and a decade and a half rolled past (past Mumford & Sons, past Macklemore, past Rudd and Gillard and Rudd again, past a global pandemic), at some point the topping ceased and the barrel just sat. A light dusting of flor developed across the surface, locking in and evolving a little window to our past. The toast we didn’t love has given way to cultured butter and grapefruit pith, the very characters you’d expect from 15-year-barrelled Chardonnay made in a hot vintage but with a firm line of acidic structure. Hints of cashew. Drink history.

97 points - "Salty and flor-driven saline. Jura, the archetype. Pithy apricot, Meyer lemon, curry leaf and a certain sandiness, with salt mulched into brine. The sheer intensity of this wine cannot be bridled by pithy commentary. Stunning! Knee-jerking and thrill-seeking! Like an early model Alfa Romeo or a Sydney dance party before the nanny state cabal. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

BK Wines

BK Wines is one of the poster boys of the modern artisan wine movement in the Adelaide Hills.

Owner/winemaker Brendon Keys is not afraid to do things differently. His wines toe the line perfectly between a lo-fi and scientific approach to winemaking. The wines are precise, edgy and layered, showing the perfect intersection of a natural wine ideology and sound technical craftsmanship.

His wines are creatively imagined, an artist meets skateboarding punk rocker kind of vibe. And they have a very solid and well-deserved following. In short, BK is one of the more respected producers of the Adelaide Hills avant-garde.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
