Description

You may know Peter Schell and Spinifex for their earth-shatteringly good Barossa reds, but the man also knows how to make a mean white.

In 2014, Pete and wife Magail purchased an old Eden Valley vineyard planted with excellent Riesling a few years ago and the results so far have been top notch.

Now released under the Rostein estate label, this old vineyard (planted originally in 1945) crops ridiculously low, usually yielding less than a tonne per acre. The fruit is treated to old 1000L oak for ferment and 16 months maturation, with time on lees and the barrel work bringing layers upon layers of texture. The finished wine is unfined and unfiltered so you get to experience everything this wonderful fruit has to offer.

It is an astonishingly good Riesling in a alternate style to most from the area.

This Eden Valley Riesling was sourced exclusively from our High Eden Vineyard which grows at c 490 m asl. There are two parts to the vineyard, one planted in 1945, the other in 1956 - this cuvee is made predominantly from the 1956 section. The vineyard is managed biodynamically, dry grown and hand harvested. The 2018 growing season was a good one and this was reflected in the 'generous' yield - in an historic context - of 1.5 t/ac (28hl/ha).

This cuvee was fermented wholly in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts matured on lees for 4 months prior to racking and assemblage.

Bone dry but with the weight and texture characteristic of concentrated, low yield fruit.

94 Points - "From a selection of the Eden Valley vineyard, this has been fermented in 1,000-litre oak and has a rich, complex and flinty feel with attractive, pithy-grapefruit texture and a juicy, fine and long palate that offers plenty of textural build. Tight and powerful drive of phenolics and acidity into the finish. Try from 2022. Vino-lok glass stopper." - Nick Stock (JamesSuckling.com)

95 Points - "All about the texture, generosity for the variety, impact of each sip. Memorable for its curls and curves of fuzzy, nutty savouriness though the mainstay is lime juice, pure, unadulterated, gently sweet but with a rod of tang thrust through. Refreshing, but not simple, detailed and layered in the bits and pieces that make this wine more than the Eden jazz standard. Delicious from hello." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

89 Points - "First release. Hand-picked fruit. Wild fermented and aged in both oak and stainless-steel tanks; partial mlf; bottled without filtration at 16 months. Eden Valley riesling, but not as we know it. Medium straw hue. More about the texture and complexity of wild fermentation, mlf, barrel maturation and lees age than it is about primary fruit, this is a spicy, nutty and creamy riesling. Phenolic bite detracts from an otherwise creamy and long finish." - Tyson Stelzer (Halliday Wine Companion)

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

 • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
 • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
 • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
 • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
 • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
 • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
