Description

There has been Hoddles skin-contact Gris on Skins before but this is now full-bore orange wine - perhaps that's why we have to capitalise SKINS? Or are they just shouting?

Inspired by the skinsy wines of Sicily, this is fresh PG, kept on skins for 12 days in an open vessel, with regular hand plunging.

Bottle in a new cool 500ml large Gris grenade bottle, this was a gently bitter pleasure, with concentrated flavours of apple and pear, with ginger and exotic spices notes throughout.

This wine was picked in the morning, left in the cool room over night to chill then destemmed to an open pot. Gently hand plunged for about 12 days, then pressed straight to cask. In regards to winemaking, that’s about it. No additions for acidity or yeast, settled in tank and straight to bottle.

The ‘SKINS’ project was initiated back in 2012 when I did a harvest at Passopisciaro on Mt Etna in Sicily. It was quite interesting to look at the native varieties grown on Etna and also their philosophy. It really was a light bulb moment when it came to some varieties. Back then with Pinot Gris, I would have put it in the same category as Sauvignon Blanc. Being quite boring to grow, simple to make and not a wine I would want to drink. Then came that moment on Etna, where the belief is that some varieties the flavour is in the skins and not in the pulp. With Pinot Gris being a shade lighter than Pinot Noir in colour, why didn’t we use the skins to get some flavour that the variety was desperately lacking.

94 Points - "Looks like a very dark rosato. Strawberry, musk, spice, a gentle vermouth and almond paste richness. Poached strawberry and pear in red wine, fresh bite of acidity, fine dusty tannin grip, but really quite soft in a way – succulent like a great Chinese meal – with red fruit and pear on a frisky finish of excellent length and orange zest. Delightful. Such a great thing to drink." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Orange is the new Red.

First time Orange Wine. Very impressed, colour is more like a light shinny Pinot Noir. Strawberry cherry cranberry, with a bit of that sweet sour thing going on. Unexpectedly pleasant dry grippy finish. Had this with fish, but would be great also with a spicy Asian dish like a pad kee mao.

    Textural explosion.

This has heaps going on and would be great with food - lot's of spice and Campari notes. As apposed to their normal Gris the skin action is really turned up so need to like that style.

Why aren't more bottles sold in 500ml?

Apart from the quality of the wine (which I'll come to) I love that this is sold as a 500ml bottle. Perfect for a mid week drink when there are just 2 of you (half bottles never go far enough).

Now onto the wine - if you're a fan of skin contact wines then you will love this. It's the epitome of where this style has got to in Australia. If you're not a fan of skin contact wines, then you should be and this is the wine to change your mind. End of discussion.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
