It's fantastic to have the impressive new single-vineyard offerings from Gareth and Rainbo Belton from Gentle Folk in store for a brief time. Three Pinot Noirs, three Chardonnays - one of the most exciting wine ventures in the country.
These fantastic lo-fi wines come from deep in the rolling vineyards of the Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills. The motto for Gentle Folk is small batches of fun and creative wines, filled with personality, energy and a certain je ne sais quoi that you just won't find elsewhere. Clean, unpretentious and drinkability writ large.
The detail, structure and sublime texture of these wines are something to behold. The sort of wines that you want to contemplate in fine glassware over long conversations with loved ones. The Pinot Noirs are delicate and evocative, the Chardonnays a smooth, glassy glide of freshness and fascination. These sit at the apex of 'minimal intervention' wines in the country. But if the single vineyard expressions are a bit out of your price range, never fear - the 2021 Village Blanc, 2021 Rainbow Juice or the 2021 Village Shiraz offer fantastic value easy drinking for all your white, rose or red desires at a very reasonable price point considering the quality you'll find within.
"Out of a lot of the colour and joy in the Basket Range, Adelaide Hills, perhaps one of the most concerted and considered projects is Gentle Folk. Farming hard, and organic, careful winemaking, a lot of hand wringing and a yen for staying mostly out of the spotlight, Gareth Belton and family are making increasingly very serious wines. The new releases of single vineyard chardonnay and pinots are case in point."
