Steve Pannell's wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.
They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered. Here's the best value way to try some of our favourites.
Steve Pannell’s love for Mediterranean varieties runs deep, and this blend shows exactly why. Grenache brings the lift, Shiraz brings the shape, and Touriga Nacional ties it all together with spice and perfume. It’s McLaren Vale fruit through and through – warm days, cool nights, and that mix of red clay and sand that keeps everything vibrant.
The 2023 season played right into Steve’s hands. A long, mild ripening meant bright fruit and plenty of natural acidity, so he could keep the winemaking gentle – wild ferments, basket press, and old oak to round it out. Nothing fancy, just fruit, place and texture.
In the glass it’s fragrant and juicy with raspberry, plum and a hint of rose and dried herb. There’s a touch of grip, a bit of spice, and a savoury edge that keeps it all in check. It’s lively, medium-bodied and dangerously drinkable – a wine built more for the table than the cellar.
The Basso is a lighter, fresher, more 'smashable' version of Grenache from Steve Pannell.
It's Steve's minimal-intervention wine. It's bottled with a minimal amount of sulphur, unfined and unfiltered.
Steve's wines are all about melding with our Australian culture and this is the perfect fit for BBQs and beach cricket.
It's lighter in body, dappled with the lacy tannins and spice of early-picked Grenache - It's just a great anytime/anywhere red from one of the country's finest winemakers.
Field Street has always been Steve Pannell doing what he does best – honest, unforced McLaren Vale Shiraz that speaks of where it’s from. The fruit comes off red, ironstone soils around his home in Blewitt Springs, a pocket that gives Shiraz plenty of flavour without tipping into heaviness.
The 2023 vintage was kind to the Vale – mild days, cool nights and a long ripening window. The fruit came in clean, bright and full of life. Steve kept it simple in the winery: open ferments, basket press, and time in large old oak so nothing gets in the way of the fruit.
It’s all black cherry, plum and a flick of spice, with that trademark Field Street softness through the middle. The tannins are fine, the finish is long and savoury, and it just feels effortless – the kind of red you pour without needing to think too hard about it.
The Dead End Tempranillo is a juicy, medium-bodied red that is yet another case in point the mastery of one of Australia’s most forward-thinking winemakers, the peerless S.C. Pannell. Sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, where Spanish varietals thrive, this wine is a perfect match for our warm Aussie climate and modern food culture.
Bright aromas of cherry compote, sarsaparilla, and cola leap from the glass, with hints of lilac, marjoram, and earthy undertones adding complexity. On the palate, it’s all about juicy red fruits with a subtle savoury edge. The tannins playfully tug at the flavours, delivering a dynamic mouthfeel that’s both refreshing and full of character.
A staple of the S.C. Pannell range, Dead End Tempranillo is designed for immediate enjoyment but has enough structure to develop in the bottle. If you’ve loved the award-winning Tempranillo Touriga, this one will be right up your alley—an easy-going yet deeply satisfying wine perfect for any occasion.

"Black cherry, blackberry pastille, cherry cola, black jellybean—all sans confection—chinotto, leather, panforte spicing, scrubby herbs, and a hint of violet or the like. The palate is dutifully structured with classic tapas-beckoning tannins. It’s got a bit of intensity and presence, though it’s not big by any stretch. Very nice."

Stephen Pannell's curiosity with Italian varieties continues here with this fun, eye-catching Montepulciano.
If you aren't familiar with the variety, it's not at all dissimilar from something like a Shiraz. It shows deep, dark fruit, smooth velvety tannin and flecks of spice.
It's the perfect gateway into Italian varieties for those who are used to drinking the Aussie classics.
You take these varietal characteristics, add a seasoning of the classic 'McLaren Vale chocolate' that the region is known for, and you've got yourself a slinky, seductive red that's primed to match with an array of food, anytime, anywhere.
Steve Pannell's affinity with Italian varieties is well documented.
He has been a great champion of Italian red grapes and their suitability in the Australian climate and culture. Steve planted Nero d'Avola (Calabrese) on his Olivers Road vineyard a few years back. The wine is now here and ready to go.
This Sicilian variety makes soft, supple, slurpy wines that work well with a wide range of foods. Steve's central message always focuses on a fusion of wine with the Australian lifestyle. This wine is the perfect BBQ go-to.
A flood of berries, licorice, sweet spices and smooth, soft tannins, it's just a great all-rounder and a great addition to the S.C. Pannell stable.
