2024 Dominique Portet Fontaine Cabernets

With Bordeaux in their blood, the Portet family have always had a soft spot for cabernet blends, and the Fontaine Cabernets is their way of showing that pedigree in an easy, everyday style. The 2024 is cabernet sauvignon at the core, with merlot, malbec and cab franc rounding things out, all from vineyards scattered across the Yarra Valley.

The season was cool and steady, giving fruit that’s vibrant and finely balanced. Hand-picked, gently fermented, then aged for 10 months in French oak (only a splash of new), it’s a wine that feels polished without being fussy. Medium-bodied, full of dark berries and violets, with silky tannins that make it just glide along.

And while it’s made to be approachable, this vintage really over-delivered - it picked up 95 points from the Halliday Wine Companion and impressively went on to win the Trophy for Best Red Wine at the Yarra Valley Wine Show. Pretty amazing for something still comfortably under $30 a bottle.

This is Bordeaux know-how with Yarra freshness, and one of the best-value reds you’ll come across. Back up the truck!

"An excellent edition of this perennially good and well-priced wine... One of the Yarra's absolutely best buys."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

2024 Mulline Pinot Noir

Ben Mullen has a way with Pinot Noir, and this is his most approachable expression at an unbeatable price. Sourced from four carefully chosen vineyards across Geelong, it’s a seamless showcase of the region’s energy and elegance—a Pinot bursting with bright fruit, spice, and sheer drinkability.

Since launching Mulline Vintners in 2018 with business partner Ben Hine, Mullen has been rewriting the script for Geelong wine. By working closely with top growers and keeping his operation small as essentially a one-man-winemaking-band, he’s producing some of the most exciting wines in Victoria today.

This Pinot Noir is a riot of aromatics—wild cherry, raspberry, and cranberry leap from the glass, laced with hints of white pepper, dried herbs, and subtle earthy spice from a judicious 20% whole-bunch fermentation. The palate is pure pleasure: silky, fresh, and alive with mouth-watering acidity. This is the best value Pinot that's come out of Ben's winery to date.

A Pinot that’s as serious as it is fun, the 2024 Mulline is best enjoyed slightly chilled, poured generously, and shared with good company. No overthinking required—just revel in its deliciousness.

"Gosh this is an attractive wine... Fruit and florals are the drivers but then the extras are tucked within... There’s fabulous drinking to be had here."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points
"The energetic palate is light to medium bodied with the wine's fine-grained tannins and bright acidity making for a delicious and refreshing mouthful. Good, nay, great now and over the next 3–4 years."

2022 Yangarra Estate Shiraz

Yangarra Estate are absolutely one of our very favourite producers and a winery that is making serious waves in the Australian wine industry.

Being a hero for the McLaren Vale region, both Shiraz and Grenache are their specialties. Peter Fraser loves working with the old Shiraz vines on the estate and has perfected his style here over the last few years. This is now consistently one of the most bankable Shiraz in the Vale.

It has become a beacon of value for those looking for a wine of serious quality that won't bust the bank account.

If you love Shiraz, if you love McLaren Vale, if you love wine at all, you should buy this.

95 Points
"Trademark Yangarra tannins kick in swiftly and carry the flavours long through a savoury finish. This is charming, but it’s also built for food. Seems like a very fine year for shiraz at this address."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points
"Elegant yet wild, with notes of cured meat, red cherries, currants, white florals, pepper berries, and Dutch liquorice... A wine that unfolds slowly and gracefully."
- Cassandra Charlick (Wine Pilot)

93 Points
"Good length with finely built tannins ensuring a dry finish. Still youthful, and cellaring will be well rewarded."
- Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

93 Points
"Blackberry conserve. Luscious fruit and abundant soft, powdery tannins."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

93 Points
"Combines the generosity of shiraz with a slightly rustic dried herb character that seems a part of the Blewitt Springs DNA... Bright and lively with a typical energy."
- Ray Jordan (Winepilot)

2023 Nick Spencer Wines Medium Dry Red Blend

Nick Spencer’s Medium Dry Red Blend is a nod to a golden era of Australian wine – the classic ‘Aussie clarets’ of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Back then, the focus was on crafting beautiful, balanced wines from multiple varieties rather than spotlighting single regions or grapes. Nick’s 2023 version captures that spirit in a modern, polished way.

Built on a Cabernet Sauvignon base, with Shiraz and a splash of Malbec, it’s vivid and immediately engaging. Expect a lifted, floral nose with notes of blue and black fruits, ironstone, aniseed, and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied, with a crunchy cranberry-like acidity and silky tannins that promise a good few years of evolution if you have the patience.

As always with Nick’s wines, it’s an exercise in balance, charm, and drinkability. A roast lamb or a hearty tray of roast veggies would do it justice. This is a true-blue, proper Australian red, thoughtfully done.

95 points
"MDR is a medium-dry red; a pitch-perfect blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec and shiraz... Impressive."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points
"This is such a pure expression of cabernet... Drinking this is like watching steam rise from a cool dark pond; here though the steam is scent. It just keeps on rising as if it can barely stop itself. It’s a beautiful drink and a charming experience."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points
"A cacophony: Earth and pencil graphite, crushed kitchen herbs, cardamon pod, bay leaf, cigar butt, asphalt, cassis, bramble, boysenberry and nuances of vanilla bean paste... The balance and depth are exemplary. Bargain."
- Regan Drew (Wine Pilot)

2024 Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese

There are few viticulturalists in Australia that get Sangiovese right. It's a difficult nut to crack, it seems. Well, here's one that's inspired by the fantastic wines of Chianti, and hits the nail square on.

Mark Walpole works the Aquila Audax Vineyard in Beechworth with an eye only for quality. This Sangiovese comes from the upper exposed slopes of the vineyard, vines planted on shale and metamorphic rock.

With the skilled hands of winemaker Adrian Rodda doing all the right things in the winery, the Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese comes out with classic varietal character and offers excellent value for those who enjoy the savoury, grippy drinking experience that this variety can give.

"Mark Walpole loves sangiovese and the feeling is reciprocated... Potential? You bet!"
- Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

2023 Aphelion The Confluence Grenache

The Aphelion The Confluence Grenache is a brilliant showcase of Rob Mack's mastery of McLaren Vale Grenache. Sourced predominantly from the prestigious Blewitt Springs subregion, this vibrant and expressive wine seamlessly blends whole berry and whole bunch ferments to create a Grenache that is complex yet fantastically drinkable.

In the glass, it’s a stunning, bright red with purple hues. Aromatics of raspberry, cinnamon spice, and red liquorice leap out, with a hint of herbal intrigue. On the palate, you’ll find wild strawberry, Satsuma plum, and fine sandalwood, balanced by soft, fine tannins that give the wine a beautiful length and poise. Despite its intensity, the Confluence remains light on its feet—packed with flavour but never heavy.

Perfect for drinking now but capable of evolving through to 2035, this is a wine that works equally well on its own or paired with food. Whether you’re enjoying a casual evening on the deck or indulging in a special meal, the 2023 Confluence Grenache is a versatile, crowd-pleasing bottle that reflects the best, brightest side of of McLaren Vale Grenache.

95 points
"This is all charm, but with a distinctly sophisticated elegance of delivery, with all the expected pops of red fruit – raspberry, red cherry, redcurrant, some pomegranate – conveyed with vibrancy but never confection, florals, white pepper, musk and a hint of orange peel accenting. The tannins are fine, naturally wrought, food friendly and perfectly synched with the medium fruit weight. Just lovely."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points
"Strawberry, raspberry, a fair amount of spice, a little twist of orange peel and amaro herbs too. It’s medium-bodied, offers bright cranberry crunch to acidity, and the quality of the tannin is something of a highlight – kind of like pumice stone – then it’s all juicy red fruit with a cinch of bitterness and a savoury flourish closing out a finish of fine length. It’s really good. It has energy, and it drinks very well too."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
