"One of those white wines that can suit almost any situation calling for a good glass - it's destined for the lunch table."
- Brendan & Laura Carter
The Unico Zelo owner/winemaking dynamic duo of Brendan and Laura Carter are hugely passionate about Fiano, and they wholeheartedly believe in this variety's suitability to Australia's climate and culture.
So do we, it's a winner.
This comes from the ancient sandy limestone soils on the iconic Ricca Terra Farms vineyard in the Riverland region of South Australia. Like in previous years it's a wonderfully textural wine, with the detail and balancew improving each and every year.
All up it's delicious to drink, perfectly built for enjoying with food and great value for money.
The 2025 release of Paralian’s single-vineyard Fiano comes off the Lacey family’s vineyard in McLaren Vale – grown sustainably on sandy loam over limestone and ironstone, just a few k’s from the coast. It’s a variety that’s really settled into this part of the world, and Charlie Seppelt and Skye Salter are handling it with the kind of light, thoughtful touch it deserves.
Picked in the cool of night, the fruit was mostly fermented in stainless to keep things bright, with just a splash going into old French oak for a bit more shape. Some extended lees time rounds it out and brings a gentle savoury thread to all that freshness. It’s aromatic and crunchy but not too lean – there’s texture, a bit of grip, and just enough complexity to keep it interesting without losing the drinkability.
It’s the kind of white you’d happily pour with seafood or drink cold out of a tumbler on a warm evening – uncomplicated, well made, and just really nicely judged.

"Green apple, pear and lemon, oregano perfume... a sort of rustic let’s-drink-it-fast-and-cold-from-tumblers charm... the thing I like about it most."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
If you want to see what Australian Fiano is all about, the Coriole version by Mark Lloyd and son Duncan Lloyd is in the top echelon, to be sure.
Boasting the country's first commercial release of this variety in 2005, Coriole have developed an affinity with Fiano and year-in-year-out turn in an excellent example.
It's crisp, textural, and importantly for a white wine from McLaren Vale, it maintains freshness and lively acidity, irrespective of vintage conditions.
A lovely wine no matter which way you dice it, and undoubtedly one of the country's premier Fianos.
Bryan Martin has always had a soft spot for Italian grapes, and his latest Fiano makes it pretty clear why. Sourced from the sun-soaked Hilltops, just north of the Canberra District, this is a white wine with some real depth behind its good-time glow.
Fiano’s naturally high acidity and gentle savoury edges play right into Bryan’s texture-focused winemaking style. It’s pressed straight to old puncheons for wild ferment and a long rest on lees, which gives the wine weight and detail without muting the freshness. Think white stone fruit, a flicker of lemon rind, maybe even a little almondy waxiness - all tied up with a saline snap that makes you want another sip.
This isn’t a showy white, but it’s full of character. A little Mediterranean flair, made with care, and built for drinking any time: from sunny lunches to seafood dinners and everything in between.
Fiano might be an underdog in Aussie whites, but hit the right producer and it totally shines. Oliver’s Taranga have been growing the grape since the early 2000s, and their winemaker Corrina Wright is affectionately known as the “Queen of Fiano” - she clearly knows what to do with it.
The 2025 version is a charming mix of texture, citrus zip and savoury flair. One moment it’s all pine nuts and cashew cream, the next you’re tasting kaffir lime, fresh basil and punchy tropical fruit. The palate is creamy yet vivid, like golden delicious apple and juicy peach rolled in preserved lemon zest, with a finish that keeps going - fresh, gingery and full of life.
It’s a wine made to be devoured with spicy food or just on its own with friends. It feels effortless, versatile, and an absolute joy in the glass from start to finish.

"It’s another excellent release... There’s intensity of fruit here, with a textural roundness preceding a pithily racy drive, suspending the flavours long."

Alex Sherrah’s 2024 Fiano is the kind of white that does a lot without making a fuss. It’s fresh and bright, with plenty of flavour and just enough texture to keep things interesting. The fruit comes from two McLaren Vale sites - one down near the coast in Tatachilla, the other up in Seaview - and that mix brings both crunch and depth to the final wine.
Alex keeps the winemaking pretty simple: half the juice goes into tank, the other half into old barrels, all on lees for a bit of texture. No fining, no acid adds, no fluff - just clean, thoughtfully made wine that’s all about drinkability. It’s the sort of bottle that works just as well with a plate of seafood as it does on its own, and one that feels completely at ease in any setting.
One of the better value Fianos in the country.

"This is a fine expression of the grape, picked at just the right moment and made adroitly. Crisp golden apple, nashi, lemon zest, celery salt, a hint of makrut lime and fresh jalapeño. There’s a mineral clarity to the wine, subtle savouriness and texture from half seeing old oak fermentation/maturation, with twin stewards of fine acidity and pithiness bringing things to a close. Just gorgeous."
