Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

Bischel’s Scharlachberg Auslese takes us to the oldest vines in one of the brothers’ finest vineyards. This is rich, sweet Riesling from painstakingly selected fruit, and we’re thrilled to have it in our initial shipment from Weingut Bischel.

Scharlachberg is a warm, steep slope of ancient quartzite and slate. Its rocky, free-draining soils keep vine growth in check, producing tiny berries with concentrated flavour. Christian and Matthias select the intensely ripe and noble-rot-affected grapes by hand, then gently press them for a slow, cool fermentation with wild yeasts. Four months on fine lees adds texture before bottling.

Peach, apricot and citrus fill out a concentrated, silky palate, with generous sweetness and bright acidity keeping each sip fresh. At just 7.5% alcohol, it carries all that flavour with a wonderfully light touch.

Old vines, a great Riesling site and meticulous fruit selection make this one of the better value Auslese wines on the market today.

Vineyard

The grapes come from the oldest part of our top vineyard Scharlachberg. Quartzite & slate from the Devonian characterise the soil in this very warm steep slope. The high-water permeability of the poor rocky soil reduces the vigour of the vines and thus promotes the ripening of extremely small-berried, aromatic Riesling grapes.

Vinification

Selective hand harvesting of the highly ripe and Noble Rot grapes. For optimal extraction of the aromatic substances, the grapes are gently crushed and pressed in the winery. After gentle filtration, the crystal-clear juice ferments at low temperatures with wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks and is bottled in spring after 4 months of fine yeast storage.

Tasting notes

Crystal clear fruit of peach, apricot and citrus on the nose. Concentrated on the palate with a smooth sweetness which, together with the radiant Riesling acidity, brings out the full harmony of the wine.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
