Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

Bischel’s Rieslings were the main draw for us, but we couldn't look past this delightful, delicious little Silvaner!

Christian and Matthias Runkel source it from 40-year-old vines in St. Laurenzikapelle in Gau-Algesheim, a south-facing slope with limestone and marl soils. It’s a specific vineyard behind a modest estate label, which gives this estate white plenty of substance and says plenty about the care they put into this range.

The grapes spend several hours on skins before a slow, gentle press, followed by fermentation in stainless steel and five months on lees. That builds texture while preserving the fruit’s freshness. It's light and playful, with just-ripe pear and apple coming through with a little spice, followed by a gently creamy palate and nice savoury finish.

Easy-drinking, old-vine Silvaner with real character and terrific value.

Vineyard

The grapes come from a 40-year-old Silvaner vineyard in Gau-Algesheim's St. Laurenzikapelle. Tertiary marl and limestone (Terra Fusca) characterise the soil there. Exposure: Medium to steep slope with southern exposure.

Vinification

Selective harvest according to ripeness. For optimal extraction of the aromatic substances, the grapes are gently crushed in the winery and left to stand in their own juice for several hours. After gentle pressing for several hours, the juice ferments partly with wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks. After 5 months of yeast storage, the wine is bottled in spring.

Tasting notes

Intense spice and yellow fruits on the nose. In the taste strong fruit of pears and ripe apples. In the finish it shows a lot of structure and a fine creaminess.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
