Description

This is regarded by many as Australia's most cellar-worthy blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Owner/vigneron Barry Morey makes this in a traditional way, utilising a small amount of skin contact, 100% barrel ferment and extended ageing on lees to give extra dimensions to this classic white coupling.

This wine drinks beautifully from the day it is released, but with time in bottle comes more chapters to the story.

Considered one of the touchstones for quality for Australian Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends, this is a wine you need in your cellar.

"Heightened concentration and purity to this classic white blend from a vintage that is looking mighty smart. There is the elegance, the poise – a given with this producer – and then there is that something extra..."

I think there is way more to come from this wine, but the slip of nougat and gentle malo-esque feeling of creamy softness works well with the perky slosh of pulpy grapefruit and saline minerality that underscores the wine. On top, and to sniff on, pine-lime Splice, hazy green apple juice, faint pickled ginger, a little pine resin character and that skeletal feel of cooling saline veins through it all. It’s even, balanced and flows beautfully, with a gulpability that is a winner. No brainer.

    Classic wine

Not the bes value but Classic benchmark wine, tasty and last for 20+ yr.

This wine comprises 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris. Most of the Sauvignon Blanc fruit had 4 hours skin contact prior to pressing. The Semillon component is crushed and pressed immediately after picking. This wine was 100% barrel fermented with predominantly larger barrels used. All went through natural yeast fermentation and malolactic fermentation. The extended lees contact helps fill out the middle palate and gives this wine the extra dimension it is known for.

The 2024 bouquet shows lemon and lime with hints of cucumber. The citrus notes are vibrant on the palate and intermingle with crisp acid, balanced with a rounded mouth feel leaving a lingering finish.

Sorrenberg

Barry and Jan Morey planted their stunning Beechworth vineyard in 1986. Their first release in 1989 began the Sorrenberg story, a story destined to be one of Australia's great estates.

Barry farms with adherence to biodynamics, believing this to be the best way to get the most out of his home block of 2.4 Ha. on the outskirts of Beechworth. Their wines are famous for their balance and longevity. The wines are made in traditional fashion, with wild yeasts for fermentation, gentle oak maturation and basket pressing for each wine.

The Gamay is arguably their most sought-after wine, however, the thumbprint of Barry's attention to detail is stamped across each release and the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet blend are amongst the finest of their kind in the country. Sorrenberg is one of the true gems of Beechworth, and indeed Australian, wine.
