Description

Picpoul literally translates from French as "lip stinger," which tells you everything you need to know about its natural, mouth-watering acidity. Ministry of Clouds has been a massive champion of this ancient Mediterranean grape in Australia, managing their steep, south-facing McLaren Vale estate under a organic and regenerative philosophy.

They keep the majority of the wine in stainless steel to lock in that pristine energy, while a small portion goes into older barrels to develop a subtle creaminess. It completely rewrites the script on Picpoul, proving the variety can offer genuine character and texture rather than just a wallop of simple acid.

The nose is delightfully breezy and aromatic, showing off a mix of white flowers, green apple and a distinct, ozone-like sea spray note. On the palate, it hits with an intense, crunchy burst of citrus and nashi pear, backed by a light chalky grip and limestone minerality. It is a lean, beautifully tensioned dry white that stimulates the appetite and cries out for a dozen freshly shucked oysters.

94 points - "Excellent aromatics, flowers and herbs, lemon drops, green apple. Really tasty, balanced, a light chalky grip, a burst of citrus and green apple, with a finish of good length. Clean and bright. Thirst quenching and delightful." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

93 points - "The sixth release off estate vines, this was again fermented coolly in tank and in neutral barrels, with the final wine 20% barrel. Ministry of Clouds has already proved that picpoul is not just a vehicle for acid, being characterful in its own quiet ways. This reaffirms that. Decked out with light spring florals, sea-breeze-y salt-tinged ozone notes scenting fruit characters of lemon and tart golden apple. Lightly framed, with lemon barley water texture and yes, crisp acidity, this is another lovely release." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "The 2025 Picpoul is the seventh vintage of this wine to be made, and the variety represents a great opportunity for McLaren Vale. The vineyard is estate owned, on very old soils (560 –650 million years old), on slate siltstone with quartz and ironstone. The vineyard block faces due south, facing in front of the winery, and the second block faces west—the extensions are grafted onto old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and the newer plantings are grafted onto old Shiraz vines. The vineyard has been managed organically since Ministry of Clouds acquired it, and they are pursuing a more holistic regenerative philosophy. The blocks have been electromagnetically mapped at 60 centimeters and 120 centimeters to ascertain a clear view of the steep site here in McLaren Vale. This has been useful in deciding which areas to mulch, irrigate and where to install agriculture drains in order to keep some areas dry, and the canopies are managed differently as well—all in the pursuit of managing even yields and ripening. Picpoul is a later-ripening variety—even after many of the reds—and yet the acidity holds throughout the ripening season. The wine itself is crunchy and bright, with white flowers, sweet pea, green apple and citrus pith. This is an excellent wine that shows exceptionally well in a warm and very dry year such as 2025. It is super. 12% alcohol, stale diner screw cap.

Handpicked and naturally settled, the free-run juice went into stainless and sat on the lees for four or five months. The pressings were hyper-oxidized, matured in neutral wood and held without sulfur until racking and blending with the stainless component. This accounts for around 20% of the total." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

91 points - "Intense wine with pepper, creamy lees and green apple aromas, crisp and lively, the palate lean, refined and tensioned, a seriously refreshing and harmonious style of dry picpoul, which stimulates the appetite." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Ministry of Clouds

Ministry of Clouds is a partnership between wine industry 'veterans' Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood, who set up the venture in 2013, with their first releases coming in 2015.

Having worked for some of Australia's leading wineries such as Yalumba and Wirra Wirra, the duo began sourcing outstanding fruit from Tasmania and Clare Valley for white wines, and McLaren Vale for reds.

McLaren Vale is their home, and as well as their own 11ha plot, they seek out old vineyards around the peninsula, with a focus on Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz and Tempranillo, along with the occasional foray into Carignan and Picpoul.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
