Description

Steve Pannell doesn't treat Rosé as a side project; he treats it as a headline act. This 2025 release is sourced from a single block of centenarian Mataro vines at his Koomilya estate in Upper Tintara—vines that are now dedicated entirely to this wine. That decision alone tells you everything about the ambition here.

Inspired by the great, structural Rosés of Bandol, this is "power Rosé." It offers a complex nose of rose petal, pink grapefruit, lilly pilly, and five spice, grounded by a savoury "dusty road" earthiness. The palate is plush and glossy on entry but quickly tightens up with a slight ocean saltiness and rapier-like focus.

Drink it now for its bright fruit and energy, or hold onto it for a few years to watch it evolve. Either way, this is no ordinary rose - it's a Pannell wine through and through. This is one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed Rose wines in the country. For the true believers of how good Rose can be.

"Centenarian mataro vines now dedicated for rosé. Steve Pannell takes rosé seriously. He’s not interested in making a secondary product; best foot forward and all that. And this strides out confidently... The vinous pleasure exceptional. Rosé is often seen as a ‘beverage’ wine, but this is a seriously exciting wine by any metric."

96 points - "Centenarian mataro vines now dedicated for rosé. Steve Pannell takes rosé seriously. He’s not interested in making a secondary product; best foot forward and all that. And this strides out confidently. Not flashy mind you, just impeccable fruit quality from exemplary farming and pinpoint picking time. Such a fine thing, awash with orange and rose, pink grapefruit blood orange, tart strawberries and white cherries. It does all the rosé things, yielding refreshment and succulent fruitful engagement, but it’s much more than that. Balance is à point, the pithy texture in concert with resolved acidity perfectly played, the vinous pleasure exceptional. Rosé is often seen as a ‘beverage’ wine, but this is a seriously exciting wine by any metric." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

“These wines have strength, intensity, and glorious grape tannins, which wind the palate together, almost like a double helix. The complex structure pulls you straight through.

They illustrate what I’m hoping modern McLaren Vale wine will be, which harks back to a tradition of what it looked like in the 1960s, without all the artifice of winemaking. Above all, these wines look and taste, Koomilya”. - Stephen Pannell

Unmistakably Upper Tintara, undeniably Koomilya.
