Description

Tarraford is technically the lowest and warmest of the Giant Steps single vineyard sites, sitting at just 100 metres in a protected valley in Tarrawarra. But the Chardonnay blocks are planted on the coolest slopes, one south-facing and tucked into the central vale, the other catching the morning sun from the east. The microclimate is far cooler than the address suggests, and the wines reflect it.

The 2025 season's wet winter and warm, dry spring set up a compact but high-quality harvest, and the site delivered accordingly. Handpicked and whole-bunch pressed, the juice went straight to barrel by gravity with full lees and no settling. Fermented in 500L French oak puncheons, with 18% malolactic fermentation and 21% matured in ceramic egg alongside seasoned oak. Thirty-one percent new oak in the final blend, nine months total. That combination of mlf, ceramic egg and a touch more new wood gives it a creaminess and mid-palate weight that sets it apart.

Grapefruit, nectarine, pear, cedar and salted almonds, with white flowers, saline complexity and a bit more weight and creaminess than usual from that combination of mlf, ceramic egg and a touch more new wood.

A genuinely stylish Chardonnay and in Campbell Mattinson's words, "a masterclass". Hard to argue.

"This is Tarraford in fine form. It has an inherent and up-front generosity but it’s oh so stylish from the mid-palate onwards."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Delicious straight out of the gate but structured enough to cellar for at least the next four to six years."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Planted on a cool, south-facing slope on what is one of Giant Step's warmest sites. 30% mlf, 30% new oak. There's a gentle creaminess on the nose combined with white peach and grilled hazelnuts. Less opulent than the '24 without forgoing this wine's usual texture and mouthfeel. Delicious straight out of the gate but structured enough to cellar for at least the next four to six years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion

95 points - "Tarraford is the lowest and theoretically the warmest of Giant Steps single vineyard sites. But it’s a south-facing vineyard, which keeps it cool.
This is Tarraford in fine form. It has an inherent and up-front generosity but it’s oh so stylish from the mid-palate onwards. This is not a flamboyant wine but it’s something of a masterclass. It tastes of grapefruit, nectarine, pears, cedar and salted almonds, and from start to finish it oozes class. The length of the finish is exquisite." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Vintage Notes
The 2025 season kicked off with a generous, wet winter that filled the soil profile with moisture. From there, spring arrived warm and dry. Shoots pushed early; we had fantastic spring conditions during flowering and fruit set. The dry season pushed growth and ripening along even though temperatures weren’t hot, in fact barely warmer than average, a pleasant surprise for the dryness of the season. Harvest came earlier than usual and moved quickly, a compressed vintage that asked a great deal of the team and rewarded the effort with fruit of exceptional quality, concentration and weight.

Vineyard Notes
Location: Tarrawarra Planted: 1988 Elevation: 100 metres Soil Type: Grey clay loam Aspect: North, south and east facing slopes Size: 8.5 Hectares

Located in a protected valley, Tarraford Vineyard has a discreet microclimate that is cooler than neighbouring sites. Although located in a warmer subregion of the Yarra Valley, the Chardonnay at Tarraford is planted on the cooler slopes. One block, with P58, 548 and 96 clones is planted on a southerly facing and tucked into the central vale of the vineyard. The other faces directly east, with a lovely eastern morning aspect, which we pick last. Our favourite Chardonnays from Tarraford are defined by white flowers, fresh laundry and grapefruit pith, with savoury saline and olive brine complexity. A gentle cultured cream, mineral and lanolin texture carries the mid-palate, finishing with line and length driven by natural acidity.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
