Description

Crimson is Ata Rangi’s “younger sibling” Pinot, but it’s never just a simple second wine. Named in support of Project Crimson, the trust dedicated to protecting New Zealand’s native pōhutukawa and rātā trees, it’s a wine with both heart and purpose.

The fruit comes from younger vines on the Martinborough Terrace and is made with the same philosophy as Ata Rangi’s flagship Pinot: indigenous yeasts, gentle handling, no shortcuts. Mostly destemmed fruit keeps the style supple and fruit-driven, while a small whole-bunch component brings lift and spice.

Juicy red cherry, hibiscus and wild herbs lead into a palate that’s plush but fresh, with fine, velvety tannins and a flicker of crushed rock savouriness. It’s expressive, deliciously drinkable now, but with enough depth to develop for a few more years in the cellar.

Crimson remains one of the best introductions to Ata Rangi’s style – generous, approachable, and unmistakably Martinborough.

"Elegant, pretty and perfumed with cherry, berry, anise, floral touches and a flourish of woodsmoke. The palate is light and lively, with bright acidity creating tension and driving the fresh flavours of wild strawberry, dried citrus peel and Szechuan peppercorn... Enjoy this beguilingly perfumed pinot over the next few years."

92 points - "Elegant, pretty and perfumed with cherry, berry, anise, floral touches and a flourish of woodsmoke. The palate is light and lively, with bright acidity creating tension and driving the fresh flavours of wild strawberry, dried citrus peel and Szechuan peppercorn right to the precisely defined finish where very fine, powdery tannins linger. Not a wine of power or dimension but lithe and classically proportioned for elegance. Enjoy this beguilingly perfumed pinot over the next few years." - Stephen Wong (The Real Review)

Customer Reviews

23 years ago we named this special Pinot Noir “Crimson” in support of Project Crimson, the charitable trust working to replace and preserve native red-flowering pōhutukawa and rātā trees throughout New Zealand.

Our French harvest interns described this wine as ‘glou-glou’ a term they use for a wine that is delicious and before you know it the bottle is finished.

Fresh and perfumed, this is a delightful Pinot Noir that has floral notes of rose, bergamot tea, ginger with more savoury salivating notes of roast lamb with a hint of mint. The palate is finely textured, with supple tannins and a seam of pure fruit.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
