Description

Rob Mack has been working with Nero d’Avola for years now, and it’s fair to say he’s nailed the style - bright, mid-weight, and packed with personality. The 2025 Welkin is everything we love about his approach: pure fruit, minimal handling, and a focus on drinkability over density.

The fruit comes from McLaren Vale’s sandier pockets, picked early to keep things tight and energetic. Fermented wild, mostly in stainless steel with a bit of old oak for texture, it’s all red cherry, blood orange and spice, with a faint amaro-like edge that makes it seriously addictive. The palate is ripe but snappy, generous but dry, and it finishes with just enough grip.

We’ve always enjoyed Nero d’Avola from McLaren Vale, and this is a tasty example of why this pairing works so well.

92 points - "From two sites, with the fruit destemmed and, interestingly, fermented with a handful of grenache stems, followed by a short élevage in seasoned oak and tank. Black cherry, spiced plum, cocoa, kirsch. Like a blackforest cake, but without the pomp and richness. Rather, it has a savoury, mid-weighted feel to the juicy fruits, with some sarsaparilla notes detailing further. Nicely done." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

Delicious!

Beautifully turned-out vino from Aphelion. Delicious park/esky/beach vino. Lino Ramble offer a similar interpretation of Nero with their 'Pee Wee Novello'. Keep it coming!

Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety is deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, more often than not there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
