Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

This is the sweeter side of Bischel, and we couldn’t leave it out of our first shipment. Generous Riesling fruit, bright acidity and just 7.5% alcohol make this Spätlese a delicious example of why Germany does this style so well.

The brothers source it from St. Laurenzikapelle in Gau-Algesheim, where south-facing slopes and limestone-rich marl soils give the grapes plenty of opportunity to ripen. Harvesting by hand lets them select the fruit at the right moment for this fuller, sweeter style.

A few hours on skins precede gentle pressing, then a cool, wild fermentation in stainless steel. Six months on lees adds some weight and texture. Juicy peach and citrus meet a little flint and a salty edge, with lovely sweetness balanced by lively acidity. It’s generous but remains light on its feet.

Vineyard

The grapes come from Riesling vineyards from the Gau-Algesheim St. Laurenzikapelle. Tertiary marl and limestone characterise the soil there. Exposure: Medium to steep slopes with southern exposure.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand according to ripeness. For optimal extraction of the aromatic substances, the grapes are gently crushed in the winery and left to stand in their own juice for a few hours. After gentle pressing, the juice ferments at low temperatures with wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks and is bottled in spring after 6 months of yeast storage.

Tasting notes

Flint on the nose, juicy peach and fresh citrus aromas. On the palate very fruity and elegantly paired with a mineral and salty taste. The smooth sweetness together with the ripe Riesling acidity allows the full harmony of the wine to shine.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
