Description

Tessa Brown and Jeremy Schmolzer have a real knack for Riesling, and this 2024 release is another great example of what they do best. Sourced from a few small parcels around Beechworth, it’s a wine that leans into the region’s cool climate and high-altitude bite.

The growing season was a bit of a mixed bag - some tricky frost early on meant lower yields, but the dry, warm finish gave the fruit great flavour and concentration. As always, the winemaking here is pretty stripped-back: hand-picked fruit, wild ferment, and a focus on keeping things clean and precise. What you get is a Riesling that’s crisp, bright, and full of life, with plenty of that lovely tension between fruit and acidity.

It’s a style that’s built for freshness but has just enough structure to handle a bit of time in bottle if you want to see it evolve. Classic VS&B - thoughtful, unfussy, and totally in tune with the vineyard.

"Ripe and aromatic... bone dry, bitter citrus infused, with a wonderful detail of dusty texture – it’s minerally and autumnal."
- Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

94 points - "Wild yeast fermented, neutral oak, a bit of time on lees. Made into trocken spätlese style. So, think: ripeness of fruit and dry palate. The invitation to drink the whole bottle is sent to your brain after you take the first sniff. The wine is ripe and aromatic. Mango skin, quince, pickled lemons, lemon tea, meadow flowers, a trial mix of nuts and notes of dried fruits, apples and apricots tossed with cashews and almonds in skins. Then the flavour is bone dry, bitter citrus infused, with a wonderful detail of dusty texture, it’s minerally and autumnal. The ripe-flavoured ‘dryness’ lingers for a while. There’s a very fine traction here engaging you more and more until the bottle is gone." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.
