Description

"Retailing at circa $20 a bottle, the Vickery Eden Valley Riesling is certainly “priced” as an entry-level wine, but the wines behaved anything but—showing grace and finesse at every juncture... never judge a book by its cover—there is still value left in the world."
- Erin Larkin

John Vickery has been shaping the story of Australian Riesling for over half a century, and alongside winemaker Keeda Zilm, the Vickery Eden Valley Riesling continues to set the benchmark. With its high-country elegance and quiet confidence, this wine captures the soul of the region in crystalline detail.

The fruit comes from two stellar family-run vineyards - Schubert’s 1961 plantings at Barty’s Block and Mason’s Woodcarvers Vineyard - both of which have a long-standing relationship with the Vickery team. The 2024 growing season was dry and early, pushing ripeness forward while keeping baumés low and acids in brilliant balance.

As always, pressings were included early in the blend to add dimension, without any bitterness, and fermentation was kept cool and clean in stainless steel to preserve purity.

Expect a wash of white florals, green apple, and juicy citrus. There’s a minerally line running through it all and it finishes dry and precise. Cellar it for a decade or more, or drink now for a taste of Eden at its peak.

"Although the great John Vickery has left us, his legacy lives on in the wines that bear his name. This is a cracker... It's all about that minerally cadence and precision. Super drinking."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Intensity of flavour here is excellent. Lime, bath salts and talc with a distinct minerally edge, the finish then carrying that extra spark of rock-on-rock.This is juicy. This is long-flavoured. This will develop slowly and well."

A high-tensile, limey ride; a wine that is bone-dry, vivid and possesses all the velocity and verve that you expect. Pristine lime and green apple notes, subtle jasmine and Christmas lily with hints of crushed quartz and distant herbs, but it's all about that minerally cadence and precision. Super drinking." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "For me, it was impossible to split this and its Clare Valley sibling, both from 2024. Two superb Rieslings and both great buying. The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Mason and Schubert family vineyards. Winemaking follows the common thread laid down by the legendary Riesling maker, John Vickery (who was also one of the nicest people in the Aussie wine industry and is sorely missed). Pale lemon in colour, with green flecks, the nose is an intriguing mix of river stones, florals, grapefruit and wet slate with an added hint of beeswax. There is good intensity here, drive, balance and focus, along with citrusy acidity and length. Love it and it will drink beautifully for twelve to twenty years." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

93+ points - "Occasionally, vintages roll out with such success that news of their excellence spreads before wines are even able to be tasted. 2024 was one such vintage—warm and dry but superb by all accounts. The 2024 Eden Valley Riesling is limey and intense, with pithy acidity and lean fruit characters on the palate. There is plenty of flavor here, albeit tightly coiled and firm in its youth. This is a vintage I will be very interested to watch as it develops over time. 11% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    2024 Vickery Eden Valley Riesling

    Light crisp acidic and citrusy

    Very good value

    Nice looking bottle and label

The 2024 vintage was dry throughout the growing and ripening season which accelerated ripening and as a result we had an early harvest, achieving full fruit expression at a lower baumé, with balanced natural acidity it’s a great example of Riesling’s purity.

After being harvested from the Mason and Schubert family vineyards, the grapes were processed immediately to avoid extended skin contact. As is the Vickery way, winemaker Keeda Zilm also incorporated pressing- material in the final blend to add flavour and texture to the wine. The pressings cut is taken a lot earlier than normal to retain flavour without extracting bitter phenolics. The blend was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to maintain freshness.
