Description

The Entrada range from Alan Varney are all inspired by time he spent in a small Portuguese town back in 2017. Here he makes modern and affordable wines that are meant to be enjoyed straight away.

The Vermentino is a new addition to the range, and is a perfect wine to share with friends and family around the dinner table. Brightly flavoured with a mouth-watering line of natural acidity and a little bit of weight from time spent on lees, it's an excellent casual, easy drinking white wine.

A fun & playful wine built to share.

91 points
"A strikingly fresh and briskly thirst-slaking style, with tart green apple, lemon, green almond and thyme."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

90 points
"It’s a tidy wine. Perfumed, fruit-driven, well-flavoured but then turned towards dryness and control as it finishes."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

91 points - "This came off two vineyards, with the fruit harvested early to retain freshness. The free run was fermented cool in tank and the pressings in barrel. That early pick and tank ferment make for a strikingly fresh and briskly thirst-slaking style, with tart green apple, lemon, green almond and thyme. It’s pretty linear but not tense, a pithy burr and some brininess complexing." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

90 points - "It’s a tidy wine. Perfumed, fruit-driven, well-flavoured but then turned towards dryness and control as it finishes. It tastes of Granny Smith apples and citrus, mainly, with blackcurrant bud, musk and aromatic herbs as side lines. It’s relatively straight-forward but it’s easy to see this wine being thoroughly enjoyed." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Sourced from Oliver’s Taranga and Lopresti Vineyards, McLaren Vale. Picked early to retain natural acidity. This variety has been showing great promise in McLaren Vale for the past decade and the chance to source fruit from two of the top Vale vineyards simply could not be passed up.

WINEMAKING
Picked early in the season to retain a focused acid structure in the cool of the night, the fruit was gently pressed to stainless steel tanks for cold settling. The free run was fermented with a Champagne derived yeast at a very low temperature to gently preserve the layers of varietal aromatics. This wine spent some time sitting on yeast lees to lend an element of palate weight before being bottled for immediate enjoyment.

FOOD PAIRING
This fresh white wine makes a fantastic appetiser and accompanies well with shellfish and seafood.

Varney Wines

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

The side gig became a full-time obsession, leading to Alan purchasing a dilapidated property at the Gateway of McLaren Vale to house a tasting room alongside his wife Kathrin’s restaurant, Victor’s Place. A sustainable modern winery was built and their first commercial release was unveiled. The wines have been taking off ever since culminating with Varney being named James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2021.
