Description

The 2024 Pauls Lane comes off Toolangi’s oldest vines – the original D Block Chardonnay planted back in ’95 at Dixons Creek. Winemaker Kasper Hermann has really nailed this site, drawing out both the richness and the precision that make it stand apart.

Picked in early March, the fruit was pressed to French oak (about 20% new) and a few ceramic eggs for a wild ferment. There’s no malo, so it keeps plenty of zip, while nine months on lees adds some gentle weight and that fine, chalky texture through the finish.

It’s all white nectarine, lemon verbena and a touch of spice and cashew from the oak. The palate has real shape – ripe fruit up front, a clean line of acidity through the middle, and a long, mineral finish. Proper Yarra Valley Chardonnay: detailed, fresh and seriously well put together.

From a single block of now 30-year-old vines. A bright gold with green tinges. Complex aromas of white nectarine, lemon verbena and a gentle lick of vanilla from the already and nicely integrated oak (20%). It's generous on the palate, to be sure, but there's a fine thread of grapefruit-like acidity on the long, structured finish. A lovely wine that'll age well over the next six to eight years at least.

Tasting Notes: The wine opens with seaside aromas, candles, white peach pastries, some cinnamon spice and salted cashews. The palate has a nice depth of flavour, there’s a volume of stonefruit; nectarine and white peach with pear flavoured acidity. The wine hums along nicely and features a fine chalky grip.

Winemaking Notes: Picked on the 2nd of March 2024

Vinification & Elevage: Fruit is crushed and pressed to French oak barriques (20% new) and ceramic eggs for primary fermentation without malolactic conversion. The wine spends 9 months on lees without stirring prior to bottling.

Viticultural Notes: Fruit is sourced entirely from the I10V3 clone section of D block, which are the original and oldest chardonnay plantings (1995) at Toolangi Vineyard in Dixons Creek in the northern end of the Yarra Valley.
