Description

Timo Mayer's Close Planted Pinot Noir is one of the Yarra Valley's most sought-after wines.

Grown on his tightly spaced estate vineyard south of Healesville, these vines work hard, producing fruit with remarkable intensity and fine structure.

The 2024 vintage, shaped by a warm but balanced ripening season, is all about finesse. Timo backed off the whole-bunch component this year to just 30% due to the extra power already inherent in the vintage.  Red cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle spice lead the way, with fine tannins and just a touch of new oak (Timo’s only Pinot to see any), adding depth without overshadowing the wine’s natural delicacy.

Silky, perfumed, and beautifully composed - this is Yarra Valley Pinot at its most graceful. Don’t wait too long, it never lasts.

96 points
"All estate grown with 30% whole bunches and matured in 15% new hogsheads. A light, bright ruby red. An opulent, floral and spicy bouquet where you barely detect the stems. Delicious as a young wine; red fruited and with silky, very nicely balanced tannins. A wine to drink before the '23, but it's also worth pointing out that Mayer's track record with this wine tells us that this will still be looking good five to seven years from now."

94 points - "Snappy, tart, tense and bright. Red cherry, cranberry drink, pomegranate juice, big dashes of white pepper, green capsicum, faint game meat leaving a little slosh and softness in the vibrancy inherent here. A sheath of sand-storm tannins lending a little tension, the mainstay that the wine feels tight then a little splash of juice to finish, with some powdery grip helping things out. Attractive drinking." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Great Pinot, now or in the next 10 years

Lovey perfume, with a mix of bright red fruits and subtle earthy, meaty notes. On the palate shows ripe fruits mixed with a touch of umami. Just delicious!

    Absolute Banger

This is such a great Pinot from the man Mayer. Banging QPR. Love it.

Some of the oldest Bloody Hill vines, garnet red in colour with a nose of dark sweet cherry, fresh lovage, and smoke. Sweet strawberry and cherry fruit on the plate immediately followed by savoury, meaty umami notes. Very fine tannins and good length.

Timo Mayer

German-born, enigmatic winemaker Timo Mayer is one of the great characters of the Yarra Valley. The words bombastic, charismatic and wild are as much applicable to the man as his wines.

From his close-planted Yarra Valley vineyard, evocatively named 'Bloody Hill', Timo carves out some astounding wines made with low levels of new oak and minimal additions. The signature of Timo's winemaking style is his penchant for whole-bunch ferment. His wines have an ethereal quality, firm tannins and impeccable structure.

These are compelling and extremely limited wines that tell a unique story of the Yarra Valley.
The Bloody Hill range is now the responsibility of Timo's talented son Rivar Mayer Ferguson, and has dropped the Mayer on the label from the 2021 releases. They continue to be superb value wines.
