Description

This Grenache from Thistledown comes from a single vineyard at the end of Chapel Hill Road, with a pretty wild story to tell.

The vineyard held both old and younger Grenache plantings, but almost saw a tragic end when a bird caught on fire from a power line then fell to the ground, taking the vineyard out with it. Somehow, some of those old bush vines survived the blaze - and we're certainly glad it did, because the fruit makes one luscious wine.

Highly aromatic, flavours of spiced wild strawberries, a rich, luxurious texture... really beautiful stuff.

"Attractive and refined yet so vivid and full of energy. A pristine grenache with dried strawberries and leaves, frozen raspberries, wild herbs and a touch of agave too. Juicy and precise with bright character on the palate. It's sharp and seamless with a kick of dried herbs and peppercorns mingling with the gentle red fruit. Intense flavors and length in the finish."

"A pale, pinot-like hue, this is stunningly aromatic, red fruited, blooming with rose notes, though it’s also savoury and spicy. There’s fennel seed, a twigginiess of bunch, white pepper and cassia bark, a mulchy, dry-toned forest floor character, warm earth, a little salinity. Poised and elegant of feel, with almost a pinosity, echoing the colour. A little time in bottle is needed to cohere fruit and bunch notes, but the promise of intriguing tertiary fragrance is an exciting prospect."

"Well, it’s Grenache maybe presented in something of a Burgundy style. Raspberry, strawberry, spice, mint and almond paste. Medium-bodied, silky and fine, red fruits, a lick of graphite tannin, balanced acidity, some Campari rolls in on a finish of excellent length. Lovely. Better again with a year or two to settle."

95 points - "The cuvée name and label art acknowledge the event that saw a bird electrified in power lines and torch half the vineyard – this comes from the remnant old vines. 95 points - "Vibrant ruby red hue. Nose is equally vibrant, raspberry, dried herbs and roses all leaping from the glass. This is benchmark delicious drinking, juicy raspberry fruit is lifted by crunchy acidity and for a moment you think that’s all then it morphs into a far more savoury tone with dried herbs and morcilla notes. Great length; tannins have a subtle influence towards the finish, more lifting than gripping so the end still has the same vitality as on entry." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

    Thistledown Delivers Again

Another good wine from a consistent Grenache winemaker.

Lighter in style but delicious to drink.

Thistledown

Thistledown wines was founded by UK natives Fergal Tynan, and Giles Cooke, the two MWs met while they began their WSET studies and formed a fast and strong bond.

While they have vineyards and wineries across the globe, Thistledown holds a special place in their hearts, with many of Giles' first forays into MW wine travel happening around Australia.

With renowned local winemaker Peter Leske on hand year-round, Giles is still quite hands-on with Thistledown, ensuring to be downunder throughout the year at key points in the winemaking process.
