Description

This is Tom Ward's latest go-round on the experimental #003.

He's refining the style every year, with each vintage increasing in smashability and seeing a little less wildness. This is not quite as 'out there' as the earlier releases but the intent to create a textural yet vibrant skin-contact white wine remains the same.

This is a blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris and a tiny touch of Gewurztraminer. The fruit spent some time on skins, all the fruit was co-fermented and then spent three months in old wood prior to bottling. No additions made during the making, the wine bottled totally unfined and unfiltered with just a little sulphur to keep it sturdy.

    Such an interesting flavour.

I didn’t know what to expect from orange wine. The natural yeast brought it more in line with a sour beer or a cider than a wine. I wound up accidentally drinking the whole bottle but barely suffered for it the next day. Will buy another bottle soon.

    Easy and fresh

Easy to drink. A bit on the fruity side for my taste. But not offensive.

MEET THE WINE
Grown, picked, and bottled in limited quantities, the Hashtag range offers the intrigue of unusual varietals and styles, crafted with the finesse and quality you expect from Swinging Bridge. This unique cool climate blend combines Riesling (64%), Pinot Gris (32%) and Gewurztraminer (4%) fermented on their skins to capture and combine their texture, structure and stunning aromatics. It is unfiltered and unfined, so a fine deposit or haze may be present.

EXPLORE THE VINTAGE
The 2024 season saw above-average temperatures before and during the growing period, peaking at 34ºC and leading to an early bud burst. Rainfall was slightly above average, paired with high humidity in early February, prompting proactive disease management through trimming, leaf plucking, and fruit thinning. Canopy growth was exceptional, achieving an ideal balance that supported full ripening with no leaf burn or disease impact. Minimal rain in March allowed for precise harvest timing for optimal ripeness achieved across the vineyard.

APPRECIATE THE WINEMAKING
Each of the three varieties was handled separately throughout fermentation, with the Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer each left on skins during ferment in open top fermenters. They were temperature monitored and plunged daily to ensure flavour and texture were extracted from the skins. The Riesling was fermented off skins to avoid bitter phenolics. The Gewurztraminer was processed at a quicker rate to ensure its aromatics were at the fore. After fermentation, the Gris and Gewurtz were left to rest on skins for 16 days to increase the colour and texture of the wine. The wine was then blended and left unfined and unfiltered, creating a hazy appearance and adding to the flavour and texture the #003 is loved for.

Swinging Bridge Wines

Swinging Bridge is one of Orange’s premier producers.

This producer has always served up extremely well-priced, classically styled wines, but recent years has seen the quality and variety go to another level.

Owner/winemaker Tom Ward has a vision for Swinging Bridge to be renowned for its premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and for innovation, and they're making great strides.

Their Chardonnay is already as good as any in the region; the Pinot Noir, while early days, is winning trophies and shows great promise, the innovative '# Series' is full of all sorts of deliciously quirky experiments.

An excellent producer and a leader for the future for Orange and NSW wine.
