Description

Greenock is the spiritual heart of Dan’s lineup, and of the Standish range, this cuvee is probably the most 'classic Barossa'. The early, dry 2024 season produced tiny, concentrated berries, prompting Dan to up the whole bunches to 50%. The stalks build a serious architectural frame that reins in the natural clip of the fruit.

This is a firm, rich and powerfully savoury beast that captures the muscular shape the western ridges grow from the ground up. It hits with sweet paprika, brick dust, black cherry and thick licorice, moving away from the soft fruit of recent wet years.

The mouthfeel is dense and resolute, texturally clunking through a deep mesh of dark plum and choc-cherry. It carries a robust, old-school presence that demands cellar time, yet it feels remarkably fresh, much like the legendary 2018s.

"This is ever the wine in the lineup that shows a clear sense of place. It tastes like the power and the shape that the Barossa effortlessly grows from the ground up. It is impressive and impactful."

98 points - "The 2024 The Standish Shiraz is typically powerful, savory, closed and spiced here. The nose leads with sweet paprika dolce, brick dust, rose petal, black cherry and licorice. Like all the 2024 Shirazes tasted today, the palate here is silky and structural. In fact, tasting these wines side by side, The Relic is more tannic, but this is firmer, in its way. This is ever the wine in the lineup that shows a clear sense of place. It tastes like the power and the shape that the Barossa effortlessly grows from the ground up. It is impressive and impactful. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

The 2024 The Standish Shiraz was made with fruit from the Laycock family vineyard (the fruit for the 2026 vintage is being picked today, as I stand in the winery with Dan and taste), in Greenock, with 50% whole bunches in the ferment, up from 30% last vintage. I always say that the best amount of whole bunches for me is as much as I can taste; this simple means that whole bunches from Barossa taste the same as whole bunches from Rhône, and both obscure the place in which the fruit was grown. Since that sense of place is at the heart of why I buy, drink and collect wine, I prefer it not to dominate the drinking experience. As usual, the Standish wines harness whole bunches as a tool for texture, structure and complexity but are rarely consumed by it." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "Laycock Family Vineyard in the parish of Greenock of the Barossa Valley.

This has richness and depth, a heartiness and gentle warmth, a stewed fruit character, a breathy spice note, lavish perfume and general sense of robust red wine territory. Dashes of eucalyptus and resinous spice chime in, pepper, violet florals too. Choc-cherry, stewed plum the mainstays. A little tarry grip through it all, tannins a little on the savoury side and clunking through the mesh of deep fruit and spice. A nod in the direction of old timey Valpolicella? The thought came to mind. A bold, rich, sweet strike and a slippery yet pulled in finish. It should satisfy a legion, but in the scheme of top flight Barossa, a touch elementary in this release." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

This collection of five Shiraz cuvées from the 2024 Vintage have all been afforded the same “growing up” nurturing regimen or élevage. Over 542 days and nights voyaging through malolactic fermentation, melding with the lively lees, slowly reacting with the tiny ingress of oxygen to mellow and evolve in oak barrels. One notable difference is the concrete egg for the northeast section of the Schubert vineyard.

From a dry growing season these 2024’s have indeed grown into detailed, complex and balanced wines of structured depth and lifted vibrancy. The usual suspects are on offer as well as a rebirth of one of our favourite wines – Andelmonde. After purchasing this vineyard a few years back, Nicole and I have converted it to organic farming, tended to the vines and reduced the yields. As such there are only a few barrels of this one to go around, so we have included it in a mixed six pack to make sure there is enough for everyone to share and relish. Very excited to be able to share these new wines with you!

Standish Wine Company

Dan Standish is one of the most outstanding Barossa producers in the game today.

A sixth-generation Barossan, Dan started the Standish Wine Co. in 1999. Over the intervening years, his wines have amassed unanimous acclaim. His offerings now rank amongst the rarest and most sought after Barossa wines for collectors in the know.

After learning his trade at Torbreck, under his eponymous label Dan has pursued a quest to showcase some of the Barossa region's finest and most ancient sites.

Stylish, seductive and devastatingly powerful, the Standish wines are Barossa wines with unmistakable X-Factor.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
