Description

Dan Standish has a rare knack for turning out Barossa reds that manage to be monumentally powerful without ever feeling sluggish. With The Relic, he co-ferments Shiraz from century-old vines in Krondorf with a tiny splash of Viognier right on top. It is a traditional Northern Rhône technique that coaxes out an aromatic lift and a silky texture that completely reshapes how the dark fruit sits in the glass.

The dry 2024 vintage has given the wine an ink-dark, concentrated presence, yet there is a striking freshness to the fruit. Up front, it leads with a surprisingly pretty perfume of violets, apricot blossom and cherry. Beneath that aromatic skin lies a heavy core of black plum, cassis, old leather and game.

The weight is substantial, but the mouthfeel is completely seamless. Rather than feeling heavy-handed, the plush dark fruit and a faint hint of dark chocolate are framed by firm, iron-like tannins that give it excellent shape and drive. It is a deep, effortless wine that commands attention.

"Freshness abounds here. In the mouth, the wine is silky, the tannins ferrous and profuse and the length typically long. This is very fine in its shape and monumentally powerful but chalky too. It is very impressive."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

98 points - "The 2024 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier comprises 2% Viognier (destemmed, co-fermented with the Shiraz on top). Aromatically, the wine leads with red apples and cherry blossom, cranberry, pomegranate and apricot flowers. This is floral, with rose petals and violets, all of it set against the backdrop of black fruit. Freshness abounds here. In the mouth, the wine is silky, the tannins ferrous and profuse and the length typically long. This is very fine in its shape and monumentally powerful but chalky too. It is very impressive. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94+ points - "Ahoy! With 2% viognier in tow. Over a hundred years of vine age here. Hongell Vineyard in Krondorf. All the new release Standish wines were tasted over two days too. A lusty decant to ensure the juices flow, per se.

A smooth ride here, inky and stout, a thick set red of supple texture and yet plenty of detail of fruit, spice, seasoning, savouriness in all that. Very concentrated plum and cassis characters, rose water lift, dried apricot, currants, faint toffee notes and milky chocolate elements slipping through. Exotic spice makes a mark, so too old leather, game meat, dried Italianate herbs. A bold red but so well balanced in its elements, seamless in texture, extra in length. A formidable wine of power and presence. Lush drinking ensues." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

This collection of five Shiraz cuvées from the 2024 Vintage have all been afforded the same “growing up” nurturing regimen or élevage. Over 542 days and nights voyaging through malolactic fermentation, melding with the lively lees, slowly reacting with the tiny ingress of oxygen to mellow and evolve in oak barrels. One notable difference is the concrete egg for the northeast section of the Schubert vineyard.

From a dry growing season these 2024’s have indeed grown into detailed, complex and balanced wines of structured depth and lifted vibrancy. The usual suspects are on offer as well as a rebirth of one of our favourite wines – Andelmonde. After purchasing this vineyard a few years back, Nicole and I have converted it to organic farming, tended to the vines and reduced the yields. As such there are only a few barrels of this one to go around, so we have included it in a mixed six pack to make sure there is enough for everyone to share and relish. Very excited to be able to share these new wines with you!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
