Description

Pete Schell has a knack for turning the unexpected into something special, and the 2024 Spinifex Clairette is no exception. Clairette, a Southern French white grape often found in Rhône blends, gets the solo spotlight here, and the result is a fresh, textural beauty that shows just how versatile Barossa whites can be.

The fruit comes from a single parcel of hardy vines in Rowland Flat, tucked into the elevated southern Barossa. Slow ripening allows the grapes to develop flavour while holding onto their natural acidity—a quality Pete loves in his wines. After a quick three-hour maceration, the fruit was pressed to tank for fermentation. No malolactic fermentation here—just 10 months on light lees to add a bit of texture and weight to the fresh, lively fruit.

It’s all about balance in the glass. Bright aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and a hint of fresh herbs set the stage, while the palate is vibrant and textural, with citrus and stone fruit flavours leading to a crisp, clean finish.

If you’re into whites with personality and a little edge, this is a brilliant choice for fans of textural whites or anyone ready to explore something different.

    Spinifex Clairette

Loved discovering this lesser known grape and Dpinifex have gone this wine brilliantly. Complex, grippy, fresh in ripe apricot - textural nutty and lovely acidity!

We haven’t seen this wine since 2021, and it’s been missed! Pete Schell has been working with Clairette for many years, using it as a blending component in the much-loved Lola and occasionally giving in to the urge to make a straight bottling. It’s a fascinating variety that naturally holds its acidity and brings freshness and depth to many a southern Rhône white blend. The fruit is sourced from a single parcel of hardy Clairette vines anchored in the elevated heights of Rowland Flat on the eastern side of the southern Barossa Valley. The fruit ripens slowly, allowing flavour and weight to build while retaining fresh natural acidity.

The grapes were picked by hand, chilled, crushed and left for three hours before being pressed to tank for fermentation. To preserve the wine’s fresh charm, there was no malolactic conversion, and it rested on light lees for 10 months before bottling. The maceration provides gentle grip, beautifully counterbalanced by concentrated flavour and a vibrant finish. Who says the Barossa can’t produce great whites?

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
