Description

The 2024 Spinifex Chenin Blanc is a stunning release from Pete and Magali Schell, crafted from a tiny block of nearly century-old vines in their Dominion Vineyard. It’s hard to believe this is only the second standalone release of this wine, as it already feels like a classic in the making.

These dry-grown bush vines, perched at the highest point of the vineyard in the Angaston foothills, yield no more than a tonne of fruit in a good year. Pete picks early to preserve freshness and balance, allowing the natural breadth and intensity of the Chenin Blanc fruit to shine. The fruit is crushed without destemming, pressed directly to French oak demi-muids for fermentation, and aged for 10 months on lees with partial malolactic fermentation adding depth and texture.

This wine is pure Spinifex: bright, energetic, and beautifully textured. Aromas of crisp apple, lemon curd, and white flowers lead to a palate bursting with citrus, green pear, and a subtle savoury edge. A line of zippy acidity and a saline finish give it precision and length, making every sip as refreshing as it is complex.

This is a wine of poise and character, offering a glimpse into the incredible potential of old-vine Chenin Blanc in the Barossa. Snap up a bottle while you can—this one’s bound to turn heads.

This is just the second release of Spinifex’s Chenin Blanc, but these vines have been around for almost a century. Pete and Magali have been working with the old bush-vine Grenache and Shiraz from this ancient site in the Angaston foothills for well over 10 years, all the while eyeing an opportunity with the small Chenin block on the property. They harvested their first crop in 2022, and the wine is now a tenured addition to the Spinifex portfolio.

The one-acre block is nestled at the highest point of the vineyard. The exact age of the vines is unknown, but it’s widely accepted that these gnarly, dry-grown vines are tipping the 90- to 100-year-old mark. Even in ideal growing conditions, a tonne of fruit is about the best yield you could hope for from the entire block. The Chenin holds natural breadth and intensity of flavour, so Pete picks early to capture natural freshness and preserve balance. The fruit is crushed without destemming and pressed to French oak for fermentation, followed by partial malolactic conversion and maturation for ten months in demi-muids. Pete told us the 2024 crop delivered a wine of “freshness, intensity and glistening fruit purity.”

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
