Description

If you are an avid collector of Beechworth's finest Chardonnays then this benchmark wine from Barry and Jan Morey of Sorrenberg needs a place in your cellar.

The cooler site that the Sorrenberg vineyard occupies produces Chardonnay of immense flavour and impact. Winemaker Barry Morey gently builds layers of power and complexity through 100% barrel fermentation in an astute mixture of new and used oak.

A great site, expert farming and sensitive winemaking converging. This is a striking, characterful Chardonnay from a gem of a producer.

Want Chardonnay that tastes like REAL Chardonnay? Here's a beauty.

"There’s something special happening here. It’s the easy start, then the build of texture, then the compact finish... A wine to sit back and relax with, and enjoy all the elements unfurling."

"Offers a slow build-up in flavour intensity led by toasty oak and enlivened in zesty, fresh acidity. A long trail of toasted almond weaves through to the finish. Complexity-plus."
- Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Natural yeast ferment, 100% barrel fermented in French oak (25–30% new), mlf, extended lees contact for 10 months, eight months' barrel maturation. In many respects, a wine at the start of its journey. A rich fruit presence in peach, nectarine, pear and citrus is layered in some sophisticated winemaking complexity, bringing together spicy oak, warm bready/mealy notes, vanilla slice and toasted almond. Offers a slow build-up in flavour intensity led by toasty oak and enlivened in zesty, fresh acidity. A long trail of toasted almond weaves through to the finish. Complexity-plus." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "There was a cool and wet growing period, then warmth rolled through, and as disease pressure increased, fruit was picked to navigate that. Of course natural, barrel ferment, malo comes through, the wine rested on lees, then matured in barrel further. There’s something special happening here. It’s the easy start, then the build of texture, then the compact finish. Quite unlike many chardonnay wines, it doesn’t flow in a regal sense. There’s also quite a bit of nougat, vanilla wafer, light toffee elements, a thick wash of salted cashew and then you start to work out that Golden Delicious apple juice, green pineapple, peachy swishes, watermelon rind, ginger, toasty cinnamon and little dashes of white pepper sit in the mix. It’s a flavoursome chardonnay, but also feels effortless and fine, even with its more generous persona. A wine to sit back and relax with, and enjoy all the elements unfurling. Eighteen months to two years is the zone, me thinks, but will go a little further." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Sorrenberg

Barry and Jan Morey planted their stunning Beechworth vineyard in 1986. Their first release in 1989 began the Sorrenberg story, a story destined to be one of Australia's great estates.

Barry farms with adherence to biodynamics, believing this to be the best way to get the most out of his home block of 2.4 Ha. on the outskirts of Beechworth. Their wines are famous for their balance and longevity. The wines are made in traditional fashion, with wild yeasts for fermentation, gentle oak maturation and basket pressing for each wine.

The Gamay is arguably their most sought-after wine, however, the thumbprint of Barry's attention to detail is stamped across each release and the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet blend are amongst the finest of their kind in the country. Sorrenberg is one of the true gems of Beechworth, and indeed Australian, wine.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
