Description

Shaw + Smith’s M3 Chardonnay has been setting the standard for Adelaide Hills Chardonnay for over 20 years. Sourced mainly from their Lenswood vineyard, it’s all about balance - powerful but precise, complex yet effortless.

Winemaking is kept classic. Hand-picked fruit, whole-bunch pressed, and straight to French oak for fermentation and nine months’ maturation. The focus is on purity and expression, with nothing getting in the way of the vineyard’s natural character.

A true benchmark for modern Australian Chardonnay, M3 delivers depth and drive with the finesse that keeps people coming back year after year.

95 points
"This is decidedly delicate but with the notable magnetism that is M3... Its once again, bold and full of razzle dazzle but with all the class and finer details nicely tucked perfectly in place."
- Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "The cool and generous rainfall in the growing season led to drier than average conditions in the lead up to vintage, providing fragrantly scented yellow flowers for the introduction of the 2024 vintage. Marigold, Azalea and Honeysuckle. Paper edges caught alight with blue flame, some crushed river stone and white peach. This is decidedly delicate but with the notable magnetism that is M3. The wine moves with a stir of creamed bran, fennel seed and lemon pulp citrus. Its tension teetotallers between succulent acidity and the toasted sesame and cracked kernel oak elements. Its once again, bold and full of razzle dazzle but with all the class and finer details nicely tucked perfectly in place. Creamy Risotto di Go (If you happen to know a Venetian) or white fish risotto would make for a stunning pairing. Drink now or will while a way in the cellar for 3-6 years further." - Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

93 points - "The 2024 M3 Chardonnay is creamy and nutty, with a sophisticated mid-palate that oozes custard apples, pastry, cashews, lemon pith and spring flowers. The texture is seamless and the length very good. This is a class act, and it's looking so good through the lens of the 2024 season." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    shaw and smith 2023 chardonnay

the M3 is a fantastic example of a true Aussie Chardonnay,

lovely nose of peach and vanilla and for a 2023 its bursting with stone fruits.

the palate is ripe fruit and well balanced with the oak evident and adds complexity to the wine.

no harsh Acid in this wine but you know it will cellar well.

it's a ripper and value for money

    Great Chardonnay

Bought this wine after it was recommended to me by a friend. And it did not disappoint. Beautiful complex Chardonnay, oak is prominent but not overpowering, great acidity too. Would love to try and aged version of this wine.

Style
Fresh and fine, with vibrant nectarine and lemon pith flavors. The palate is powerful and textured, supported by fine acidity and the trademark M3 fruit intensity at its core.

Season
Cool and wet conditions during flowering disrupted berry set, resulting in smaller, lighter bunches. The remainder of the season was mostly mild and dry, with a few well-timed rain events that supported vine growth and health. The result was low yields, high acidity, and great flavor, with fruit hand-picked between 20 February and 17 March.

Source
Sourced primarily from the Lenswood, Piccadilly, and Lobethal vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, grown on loams over clay and quartz. Additional fruit was selected from trusted growers to enhance complexity.

Vinification
Hand-picked grapes were whole-bunch pressed, then gently squeezed into the finest French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine spent 9 months in barrel, undergoing both primary and malolactic fermentation before blending in stainless steel vats and bottling.
